“stamford plaza melbourne”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

we stayed at the stamford plaza a few years ago and it was excellent then. We have just stayed this weekend to go to a concert. Service was excellent and the room was very clean. The beds are very comfortable and there is plenty of room in your room to spread out. The wine bar downstairs was lovely and staff very friendly. Its not that far from the city centre and there is plenty of shoping on collins street. When in melbourne we differently recommend you stay at the stamford.

“EXCELLENT VALUE & SERVICE”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

Stayed after Christmas 2011 & during New Year 2012 with teenage daughter & her school friend.

We booked a Twin Bed + roll-away bed room for 3 @ this Hotel through Wotif.com during the New Year period of 2011 for a total of 6 nights. The price was exceptionally good and that is another reason I chose this Hotel.

Surprisingly we were able to book in just prior to New Year however were not able to have New Years Eve at the Hotel as it was booked out, however, the WOTIF online booking service mistakenly booked us IN for New Year's Eve as well, even although we had not paid for this. We advised Management accordingly and checked out into a Youth Hostel for New Year's Eve, the only thing available that night, then checked back into The Stamford Plaza the next day for a further 3 nights = Total of 6 nights.

Luckily for us there was a room available for the first part of the stay prior to New Year. We had booked 3 -4 weeks in advance only. This room was large enough for 2 however we had an extra person (small teenager) for- roll away bed, and that sat in the lounge room making eating at the table provided a bit squishy, so we were offered a much larger room however King Bed & Rollaway. We declined as it was a trouble to move everything & the smaller room proved to be fine for 3 days as it was a great deal larger than the majority of Hotel rooms in major cities in any case.

When we checked back in for the 2nd stay we took up the offer for the larger room. It was great. I had been recovering from a major operation and had been violently ill on the trip from Melbourne to Sydney on the flight and in the car both to airport in Sydney & from airport in Melbourne.

The assistant or Manager named PRUE was exceptionally helpful and tried to accommodate us in every way possible. We were very impressed with her as a Manager & customer service agent. The Hotel staff were also top quality re service: from the chappie who made up the roll away beds to the staff who brought dinner to the room, to the reception staff and especially the staff who held our bags and loaded them in and out of Taxis=> VERY impressed!

This Hotel is located in one of the most convenient & best areas of Melbourne city, really close to Parliament Station and within a lovely shopping district. We did not expect views from the Hotel rooms as we are in the centre of town which was more important to us; don't know if they have rooms with views however if they do you should book with Hotel & request this. Not important to us.

We ate at Harry's Bar on a number of occasions- especially one night with elderly relatives who LOVED ! it. Service great and food yummy plus reasonable prices for a Bar in centre of town.

We also ate thru room service also very good.

The 2nd room we stayed in was HUGE! Loved it! Kitchen & 2 TV's , lovely bedding, clean, very quiet and snazzy glass lifts show off the lovely circular designed lobby & Hotel design.

When staying away from 'Home', atmosphere & safety is very important. This Hotel has that, plus excellent professional staff, nice food, the BEST location near railway too & best shops, PLUS VALUE! Re: The internet = we paid for this, and would have preferred free wifi as it was a problem to purchase a Modem just for this purpose.

Overall though- really recommend this Hotel. Like all Stamfords -(we have stayed many times @ North Ryde Macquarie Park Sydney as I work @ the University, the rooms are much larger than average, hence can accommodate extra people. When other Hotels finally realise that families OFTEN travel with at least ONE extra family member, and that a sofa bed or roll-away in the room is no big deal, and $50 extra is reasonable, finally, then, we may have an increase in the booking rates mid season in major cities, all I can say to those other Hotels is WAKE UP!!

To the Stamford though I say=> JOLLY GOOD JOB!

Dear Pifkie

I’ve alerted your kind comments to Prue and the front office staff. They really do a wonderful job don’t they?! We always aim to provide our guests with the sort of service that will make them feel special and well cared for when away from home…especially when they are unwell, poor you! Although, it’s obvious that you still managed to thoroughly enjoy your stay in Melbourne. From the location of the hotel in the heart of the CBD it is so easy to see and do all the wonderful things the city has to offer.

We look forward to welcoming you back again in the future.

Kind Regards

We stayed a week over Christmas at this hotel. The first room we stayed in the first couple nights faced the other hotel tower making it very dark and late at night the smokers at the hotel bar would congregate between to two towers waking us up as the noise level rose. Finally Christmas night I called and asked to be moved the next day. The front desk clerk was very accomodating to the point that he would have moved us that minute. We opted to be moved the next day but not unless we could be there because we had food in the refrigerator and we also had to repack. The next day while we were out the hotel moved us to the opposite side of the tower in a room with a magnificient view. They moved the food by not the $25 poinsettia that I had decorated to make the room feel a little like an American Christmas. When I inquired about the poinsettia a search was made and a housekeeper brought it with all the branches taped up. She said it had been placed in a storage room. It was a very sad sight.
The location was perfect both for touring the city and for going to St. Francis Church for Christmas Eve midnight Mass. Melbourne is awesome at Christmas! Parking was so expensive we gave up the rental car.

Room Tip: Ask for a high room with a view of St. Patrick's Cathedral. You will have a quiet room with natu...

Dear ShirleyD49

Christmas is a festive time so there were probably are larger than normal volume of people in the outdoor café we have linking our suite towers. I’m really happy that you felt you could ask to be moved and that you got such a positive reaction from the front desk staff in accommodating your request. Pity about your poor poinsettia tough!! I too would have been upset about its mistreatment. Please accept my sincerest apology. I’m glad you still had a merry Christmas and enjoyed a beautiful Mass at St Francis. See you next time! Have a wonderful year.

“Good location for tourist”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

Hello. Just returned Melbourne and had a 4 night stay at the Stamford Plaza via a mystery hotel booking of a 5 star property on the www.wotif.co.nz site. Stay was from February 2nd 2012 to the 6th Feb.

Compared to other hotels We have stayed at around the world this is not a 5 star property as other guests have commented on but a 4 star property. But yes I would recommend it to others and would stay again. When we booked we asked for a quiet room and given a room on the 14th floor of the 15 floor hotel. The rooms were originally built as apartments but not sold and property converted into a hotel. Room very well presented and clean. Queen size bed and two wall hung TV's. Shower over spa bath ( spa not used ) kitchen in the room also but not used by us.

Hotel is actually two buildings and the room we had was in the western tower, with a small swimming pool ( too small for doing any lengths in ) spa, and steam room in the eastern tower.

Would agree with others the reception and bar in dim light areas but fitting for the type of hotel. Staff friendly and willing to assist with directions, transport to airport, flight check in etc.

Hotel in good location for walking to Bourke St shopping, MCG Cricket Ground, Flinders St, trams etc. Like a lot of cities space is prime and costs extreme. I suspect alot of other guests have been disappointed with the property thinking that they are getting a true 5 star property and I can confirmed compared to other 5 star properties the Stamford Plaza Melbourne is not a 5 star.

Once again, yes we would stay again. But also suggest when you book, ask for a quiet room. Hotel located in the city.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room. Gym although not used by us very very small, swimming pool about 10 metres lo...

Dear NZ2

We are officially rated as a 5 star hotel and that is what we are, but I recognize that some of our common area features are a little tired and outdated, hence the proposed common area refurbishments that we are in the final stages of planning for…including a brand new (and much larger) guest gymnasium. I hope you will enjoy this and all the other improvements when you return for your next stay with us.

“Back to the 1980's/early 90's”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

I booked a mystery hotel on Wotif.com but because of the room types being all 'one-bedroom suites' I already knew before completing the booking that the hotel was the Stamford Plaza Melbourne. So I scored a rate of $160 per night on the weekend. I recommend booking this way as you'll save a good $50-$70 per night from the higher rates on the actual hotel's own website.

The rooms are clean, modern and spacious but the windows didn't open.

The hotel lobby and facilities are a bit dated. I'm sure it would have taken your breath away in the 1980's but the gold rimmed elevators with half of the fairy lights around them working and half not makes for a not so great first impression. The pool and spa are like an aquatic centre and don't look as prestige as the pictures on the internet would sway you to believe. We went up there with a bottle of champaign to have a swim and sit by the pool. We were met with 5 or so screaming kids in a humid room that smelt like chlorine so we went back down to our room and enjoyed the champaign on the couch instead.

The rooms have been renovated and feel very modern. Although from what I can gather from Tripadvisor not all of the rooms are renovated so be aware of this when booking. Windows don't open so it's a bit of a glass box that gets very hot as the air-conditioning is quite weak even on 'high' fan speed. We left it on all day and still came back to a hot hotel room which gets hotter in the morning when the sun hits the glass and you can't let any fresh air in. Personally I wouldn't stay at this hotel again purely because of the windows not opening, I need fresh air and don't like to feel like I can't wait to get outside to breath in the mornings when you wake up.

Having the extra space of a lounge room with a kitchenette is very good. Much better than other hotels with just space around the bed and that's it. However you can probably find an apartment hotel that has the same size, if not bigger rooms (like the Oaks around the corner on Lonsdale) that have a balcony (ahhh fresh air) and more room.

The rooms were extremely clean! I work in hotels and I know how important this is, this hotel obviously takes cleanliness very seriously, it was immaculate.

One small piece of feedback for the hotel; don't fill my room with advertising about all of your 'extra' services like putting the breakfast menu back on my bed every day you clean the room and other promotional material next to my head where I sleep on the bedside tables. I've booked the hotel now leave me alone to choose how I spend my money when I'm there. I think if you eat breakfast in a hotel in Melbourne you're mad, there are amazing places on every block, every street to eat.

The service was professional and efficient as you would expect from a brand like Stamford Plaza, which is why I'm giving the hotel a 4/5. For a business trip the hotel would be perfect (if you can handle the window issue) but for a weekend away from Sydney I'll probably look for something more modern and special next time.

Room Tip: We were upgraded for free to a King room which had been renovated. I would recommend this room.

Dear dionmarketing

It’s great to get such thorough feedback! Your compliments are of course very welcome and your points to note are duly noted. Unfortunately, the windows not opening is not something we will be able to change, but as you know there are such wonderful things to see and do around Melbourne so spending time exploring the city and discovering the nooks and crannies is a lot of fun!

All our rooms are renovated so everyone can expect the modern standard that you experienced. As well as the recently completed room refurbishments we are in the final planning stages to refurbish the hotel’s lobby, restaurant and bar….In fact all common areas will receive a facelift. So, on your next visit you will be able to experience the Stamford Plaza in all its renovated glory! I hope you will enjoy the improvements. We are really looking forward to seeing them ourselves!
