The Crossley has an excellent location in the heart of Melbourne's theatre district and Chinatown. There are plenty of restaurant choices very close by, mostly Asian, and a large proprtion of Melbourne's major theatres within a few blocks. Location, however, is the hotel's best feature.
Rooms are reasonable in size and furnishings are in good condition, even if a bit dull and boring. There is adequate desk space if you're on a business trip, and enough hanging space and drawers for clothes. The room I occupied also had a kitchenette with refrigerator, electric kettle and microwave. There were adequate supplies of tea, milk, coffeee and sugar, all provided free (well - within the cost of the room). An ironing board and iron was also provided in the room.
The negatives started in the bathroom. The shower was over the bath. The side of the bath was high enough so that getting in and out posed some risk, especially when stepping onto a wet floor, where slippery tiles were a positive danger. There was no safety rail to hang on to.
Bath gel and shampoos supplied were adequate but not of particularly good quality. The shampoo in particular was harsh. There were enough towels but they were aged and quite rough.
In room lighting was designed (I think) for effect rather than effectiveness. It took a bit of organising to get good lighting on the desk without completely washing out the screen on my laptop.
TV reception was mixed - some channels were good but some were quite poor.
The front desk was efficient but not especially welcoming, although that changed on checkout, which was both efficient and very friendly.
Free access to Internet ready PCs and a printer were provided in an alcove by the lifts, but printout paper was only available at a cost of 10c a sheet - an absolute rip-off. (In Melbourne, a ream - 500 sheets - costs around $5.00)
Overall, the Crossley was reasonable value (especially when booked through a 'last minute'style of Web site), is well located, but is extremeley average overall.
Room Tip: Ask for a room that does NOT front the street - especially during Chinese New Year!
