“Good hotel for a weekend stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

person found this review helpful

The Crossley is a great hotel and good value for a 3 star hotel. I was in Melbourne over a weekend for the Australian Open and it was a fantastic location. The hotel is clean and quiet.
For a 3 star hotel they still had several little perks like the weekend newspaper. The room I had was a decent size and was comfortable.
I found the staff to be pleasant and overall it was a great hotel for the weekend.

“Good value, good location 3 star (IMO) hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

The Crossley has an excellent location in the heart of Melbourne's theatre district and Chinatown. There are plenty of restaurant choices very close by, mostly Asian, and a large proprtion of Melbourne's major theatres within a few blocks. Location, however, is the hotel's best feature.

Rooms are reasonable in size and furnishings are in good condition, even if a bit dull and boring. There is adequate desk space if you're on a business trip, and enough hanging space and drawers for clothes. The room I occupied also had a kitchenette with refrigerator, electric kettle and microwave. There were adequate supplies of tea, milk, coffeee and sugar, all provided free (well - within the cost of the room). An ironing board and iron was also provided in the room.

The negatives started in the bathroom. The shower was over the bath. The side of the bath was high enough so that getting in and out posed some risk, especially when stepping onto a wet floor, where slippery tiles were a positive danger. There was no safety rail to hang on to.

Bath gel and shampoos supplied were adequate but not of particularly good quality. The shampoo in particular was harsh. There were enough towels but they were aged and quite rough.

In room lighting was designed (I think) for effect rather than effectiveness. It took a bit of organising to get good lighting on the desk without completely washing out the screen on my laptop.

TV reception was mixed - some channels were good but some were quite poor.

The front desk was efficient but not especially welcoming, although that changed on checkout, which was both efficient and very friendly.

Free access to Internet ready PCs and a printer were provided in an alcove by the lifts, but printout paper was only available at a cost of 10c a sheet - an absolute rip-off. (In Melbourne, a ream - 500 sheets - costs around $5.00)

Overall, the Crossley was reasonable value (especially when booked through a 'last minute'style of Web site), is well located, but is extremeley average overall.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that does NOT front the street - especially during Chinese New Year!

“great value for money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 January 2012

Stayed from Sat to Wed in January 2012 for the tennis. Initially booked a double as was staying by myself but had late change of plans with a friend staying the first night. The hotel was able to accommodate the late changeover to twin share.

I was in a dearer hotel same time last year and found the Crossley provided so much more with the included breakfasts, free wi-fi in the room, free internet on the computer and waking up to a free newspaper at the door was an added touch. They booked my free shuttle to the skybus station with no hassles.

The main negative, which is not the hotel's fault, was that at 2am every night without fail you could hear the sound of emptying a bin full of bottles coming from the street. I stayed on the 4th floor and could easily hear it.

With breakfast from 7-10 each morning I always ate around 9.30. The Sunday morning was crazy with so many people and with not a great deal of room downstairs some people would have to eat on the next level. Monday to Wednesday was fine.

Dear Brissiebee

Thank you for taking the time to post a review of your recent stay with us. I was glad to read the Hotel was able to accommodate your change of booking and you appreciated the many extras which were included in the room price. I do apologise that your sleep was disturbed by nearby rubbish removal. We are currently working with the local council to manage this and eliminate early morning pick ups.
I do look forward to welcoming you on your next visit to Melbourne.

“Pretty good place to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2012

Stayed in queen room, it was quite spacious and included a small kitchen area with sink. Frig, microwave and some dishes, wine glasses. Free Internet was nice.

Everything was pretty well in order and comfortable. The front desk staff was friendly for the most part. About the only complaint was that our room (515) shared a wall with some housekeeping closets, so that noise usually woke us up in the morning once the staff got working.

Had a very delicious meal in the Fish Dish restaurant for dinner. The breakfast there was also nice.
