“Great location, funky, good service, but penny-pinching.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 January 2012

Right in Flinders Lane in the trendy part of Melbourne, the Adelphi offers what used to be very trendily designed rooms, but now becoming a little jaded. Will soon become passee. However it still has some novelty value. Since there is extensive and noisy construction work going on opposite the hotel during the day the hotel is offering discounted prices, so it's good value, given the location. The receptionists and head concierge were VERY helpful, guiding us to some great nearby restaurants (Movida, Press Club) and were always chirpy and bright. Breakfast was good and healthy in a minimalist setting (again good service), but it was drag to have to pay for the wi-fi connection. No hotel worth its salt charges for wi-fi in this day and age.
Also I resented them "pushing" the wine and water provided in the hotel room. It would have been a nice touch if at least the water had been complimentary. Just felt they are trying to nibble at the edges for more income versus providing service to make you feel great. The glass bottomed pool and lounge deck is a disappointment - only the very end of this 3 meter wide by 25 m long lap pool is glass bottomed and protrudes out about 2m beyond the roof. You can't see down to the road anyway so what's the point?! And the sun leaves the lounge deck in the afternoon - so make sure you do any sun bathing (but why would you in Melbourne?) in the morning..... Deck also very noisy due to the construction work. However, not a bad experience - but could have been outstanding instead of just good.

Room Tip: Ask for quiet room away from construction if you are going to spend any time in your room during the...

“Good, not great”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2012

I stayed at the Adelphi for one night in December 2011. The reception is understated and, in fairness, average for a hotel of this class. Receptionist was nice enough but a bit ambivalent. There are no porters/bell boys.

I stayed in the Adelphi suite. It was massive and the interior design sort-of cool (but a bit dated, particularly the lounges). There was an iPod dock which was good. No free internets though, which was a dive - had to pay for wireless, but it worked well.

The pool was pretty novel (it hangs over the building). The bar was ok, but no one was there.

The breakfast was exceptionally good. Certainly recommend eating there. Very impressive.

Overall, it wasn't worth the $300 a night for the Adelphi suite, but other rooms may provide better value.

Room Tip: There is a construction site next door so i don't suggest getting a roll-out bed and sleeping on...

“A little leap back in time”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2012

I stayed at the Adelphi Hotel for three nights in December 2011.

PROS:
a) GREAT INTERIORS: This hotel was designed in the 1990's by Denton Corker Marshall, a legendary Australian Architecture practice responsible for major landmarks on the continent. The rooms are still the way the architects designed them: huge Spartan room, great bathroom, rooftop 25m lap pool, crazy furniture and light fixtures.
b) GREAT LOCATION: Melbourne is eminently walkable; to stay at the Adelphi makes it even more comfortable and friendly: smack in the center, close to everything, right in the middle of the shopping and food district.
c) GREAT STAFF: I always felt welcome, got great first-hand recommendations for restaurants and sight-seeing. Knowledgeable and friendly staff: 5*-people.

CONS
a) A LITTLE NOISY: The large single-pane windows in the room mean the night can be a little rough, particularly if, like me, you are unlucky enough to have your visit coincide with a construction site underway.
b) EXTRA AMENITIES AT EXTRA COST: Having to pay for internet in the room is SO 1998. And having to pay AUS$30 for a 45-minute steam sauna feels a little stingy.

All in all: I enjoyed stepping back in time and felt at home in this well-designed space.

N.

Room Tip: Go eat over at La Movida, right around the corner!!

“Good value hotel in central Melbourne”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 December 2011

Thia hotel was one of the original boutique hotels in Melbourne. I think a lot of people stay here expecting 5 star luxury in a small hotel, where in reality, it is a great value hotel with a bit of funky flair. Has it dated? Yes, just a little, but it is still a very comfortable place to stay.

If you are traveling to Melbourne and want a nice central location, without the big hotel price tag than stay here. The staff are friendly, the hotel is tidy and it is good value for the money.

“Listen to the majority of reviews and stay away”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 December 2011

I did what some people have done and thought I know better I travel the world..... I was concerned at checking about the noise level so as for a back room.... I was then told I couldn't use the pool, we have a function on ( didn't tell me when I'd paid $300 dollars). Ear plugs on the bedside table.. Serious warning and I just could not sleep for the noise... Very arrogant I love my boutique hotel attitude... Very dated and there are better.. I checked out after one night... There are much better hotels in Melbourne

Room Tip: Don't go...
