This was my third trip to Batch and I had the same thing as both other visits: the smashed avocado on gluten-free toast. It's an enormous amount of fresh avocado, lightly mixed with soft feta then piled on top of toast and served with a big wedge of lemon to squeeze over.
The coffee is strong and refined, presented with a fern shape etched into the milk.
If you're a stickler for good coffee, this is the place to visit. If you're hungry, definitely a great choice, but don't bother on the weekend, it's painfully busy and impossibly noisy. Go during the week, it's so much more relaxing and there's no hour-long wait for food which will probably come out before the coffee - a testament to just how popular this place is with locals and visitors alike.
Whilst it's perfect for a catchup with friends, Batch is also a wonderfully comfortable place to visit on your own, with flexible seating choices and a big stack of magazines or papers to choose from.
I've had mixed experiences with the staff - they're good at what they do (making coffee, delivering food) but unfortunately not that interested in the customer, they seem to just go through the motions of late. My most recent visit I smiled and talked to the waitress as if I were the one working! She didn't utter a word, didn't smile and couldn't bare to acknowledge me. When I went to pay, the two staff behind the counter took a while to finish chatting before I could pay and leave (even though I would have preferred the bill to my table, but the waitress seemed oblivious to this). It was a bit unpleasant in that respect.
I'll probably return if I'm in that neighbourhood on a weekday and get hungry, but I wouldn't go out of my because, despite having excellent food and coffee, the service is unfriendly.
