“You must go to this bakery”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 September 2009

Wow we were so impressed with this bakery that we rated it as one of our best eating experiences while in Melbourne. We had yummy home made soup and pies followed by fantastic cakes and vanilla slice. Then we purchased meringues and cookies to take away with us. The meringue literally melts in your mouth, it was the best. Do your self a favour and jump off the tram on fitroy street and have lunch.

“make every effort to get there”

I'm a local so I'm spoiled for having this amazing bakery in Melbourne, they make bread worth lining up for and you will find that there generally is a bit of a queue to make a purchase. The breads are incredible, the sort of beautiful, organic perfection that doesn't even need butter, it truly is that good. My personal favourite is the wholewheat, its covered in sesame seeds and filled with every seed under the sun and is literally a meal in itself. The cornbread is mind blowing too and around easter they make the best hot cross buns in Melbourne, although getting your hands on one is near impossible as they sell out fast. Loaves of bread are more expensive than what you'd pay in the supermarket but its hand mand, organic and truly artisan bread, believe me its worth paying whatever they charge. My advice would be to get up nice and early and make the journey and stock up on the breads and pastries and desserts, oh also they make these little pastie type things which are filled with potato and olives, sounds weird but they are wonderful. Basically try anything you won't be disappointed I promise. I sent a visiting friend to the bakery to buy bread one morning and she complained about how many people were in the shop and how you had to line up and wait and how ridiculous it was and that she couldn't understand why and that the bread had better be worth it. One slice of wholewheat later and she was giddy with excitement and saying she would gladly line up all day for a loaf of that bread...try it, you will be very happy.

“Delicious Bread & treats”

Baker D. Chirico is a little bakery on Fitzroy Street that makes the most amazing sourdough bread. Try the Pana di Casa it is sensational bread, dense and tasty.

They also have sweets like Lemon Brulee Tart which is really lovely. We missed out on the famous donuts which we were told sell out very quickly so be sure to get there early. They have pies and biscuits and lots of tasty treats.

They have some outdoor seating if you feel like chilling out on Fitzroy Street with some delicious treats.
