“Affordable luxury by the water”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

After trudging round to several overpriced and shabby backpackers, we happened to stumble across Customs House. At $110 per night for a double room, it was cheaper than a private room in the YHA and included breakfast! Also, it was right by the harbour and in prime position for catching the boat across to MONA. I was really impressed by the affordability of the place given it's high standard of cleanliness, friendly staff, breakfast and parking inclusion and the location.

“Dinner!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 December 2011

This is a disappointing story of a Boxing Day dinner. We had not booked and just walked in asking for a table for 6. No problem. We sat down and menus were delivered to the table. Then the wait started. After 25 minutes we were able to get the waitress to come to the table. We ordered but were not offered drinks. We asked the waitress if she could arrange wine and surprisingly she said yes! She had not asked us if we would like drinks. Finally after 35 minutes we had wine! The food took another 45 minutes and then the order was wrong! The brunette waitress was very brusk and took the wrong order back to the kitchen. No apology! The correct order was delivered 15 minutes later! We had to ask for a second bottle of wine. The meal was very "pub". Nothing special! Good service would have made the difference! Overall a very average experience and avoid the brunette waitress!

“Great pub stay with character and location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 December 2011

I thought this place was great! Where else could you get heritage waterfront room with sandstone walls, and breakfast and broadband thrown in for the price? But it is a pub - not a 5 star hotel, so there are a few inconveniences such as pub noise, stairs, some mismatched furniture, no phone in room, etc.
Personally I prefer a place with character, and found this much more amenable for me than bland hotel decor and service. It's family run, the atmosphere throughout is very friendly. Also thought the breakfast was excellent (never had to wait more than 5-10 minutes) - pity about paying extra for espresso, but you can see why they do that to keep the price low for everyone. The restaurant is good for dinner too. And did I mention the service? Excellent!

Room Tip: No business centre but has free broadband in every room, and wireless access in public areas. Secon...

“don't accept a room on the first floor”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 December 2011

Particularly if you are staying on a weekend the first floor is noisy - first the band, then the street sweeping. Breakfast not until 8am, so if you are leaving early... room was very, very tired. Bathroom cabinetry damaged ('hidden' under towel display), lighting is terrible.

Room Tip: Don't accept a room on the first floor

“Nice pub and good locarion.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 November 2011

Stayed in room 3 (first floor) which was large and had all facilities in good order. The room was not noisey despite it overlooking Murray Street as well as the bar being on the ground floor. The car parking issue was solved very well because the hotel gave you a voucher which allowed unlimited parking at the nearby Murray Street carpark which was about 2 minutes walk. You saved a heaps because of this. The hotel is very central to the CBD, the wharves and Salamanca all of which are just a few short minutes away. About 10 minutes walk had you in Battery Point via the Kelly steps in Salamanca. In Battery Point by the way there is the Jackman and McRoss bakery; the pasteries are to die for. With all of this nearby, the need for a car is basically nil. If there is a downside then it was the breakfast because you had only one choice from the menu and the coffee was an INSTANT brand. This is not the sort of thing that you want. Of course if you pay extra then you will get a proper coffee like a long black. It's a pub but the location made it worth while.
