We were going to stay at a boutique townhouse in Hobart as we thought it would be nicer than a typical 'hotel experience'(eg. soulless generic rooms, bad acoustics, darkly lit lift lobbies, etc). The townhouse fell through in an unfortunate way as we discovered whilst arriving at the doorstep of the TH that we had been double booked. So at 8pm on a Friday night (& 34 wks pregnant!) we wandered into the streets with our suitcases wondering where to stay??! We made a quick decision to stay our 3 nights in Hobart at GCH instead.
We have to say GCH had none of the negative associations we often connect with hotels. It was not ostentatious, but had a generous and light foyer with comfortable places to sit. The lift lobbies were not dark places you didnt want to be in, but also flooded with natural light, spacious, and had great views of the harbour. We started off in a Mountain View room which was very comfortable, a good size, and the view of Mt Wellington was lovely. On our last night we changed to a Harbour View room in which the view was truly spectacular, and worth the additional fee to change. Our only negative would be traffic noise as the hotel is bounded on both sides by four lanes of traffic. It wasn't a major problem on level 16, our first room, and improved with our second room on level 19.
Finally, as usual when travelling, one of the best things is friendly interactions and service. Staff at GCH were friendly and helpful, and in particular Sarah at reception was wonderful in helping us with tips on local food and facilities, and also our room upgrade to a Harbour view room.
We would definately stay here again.
