Situated in a completely refurbished old corner shop on picturesque Hutt Street, Chianti Classico is an icon of the Adelaide lunch set. It is stylish and modern with polished floorboards and bare stone walls and just oozes class. You know you're going to have a great meal here as soon as you enter, such is the feel of the place.
Lunches (and I've had literally dozens here over the years) are slightly less formal than dinner but the food quality at either is always excellent. While suited businessmen dominate during the day, it's very romantically set during the evenings.
The menu is inspired by the regions of Toscana and Veneto which means the food here is rustic, yet there's a definite 'refined' look and taste to everything that comes out of the kitchen.
Service is exceptionally good (even when it's flat out) with professional, knowledgable and friendly staff. Nothing is too much trouble. Maria, the owner and often maitre'd is the perfect host, making you feel instantly at ease and just as welcome whether you're a first time visitor or a regular.
But it's the food that keeps 'em coming back.
Some of my favourites include Fiori di Zucchini (zucchini flowers stuffed with ricotta and pinenuts), Pappardelle con Anitra (pasta with duck meat), Cacciucco alla Livornese (a magnificent seafood stew) and Coniglio al Forno (rabbit with pancetta, port and sage). Their Bistecca alla Fiorentina at 1kg is a rare treat and not for the faint hearted. Don't get me started on desserts. Superb.
With most entrees around $22 and mains around $36 it's up there a bit in price, but it's money very well spent and the memories of a great outing will linger long after you've settled the bill.
Their wine list is exceptional and features the best of Australian and Italian boutique wines (many by the glass).
This may be the only place in Adelaide where you have to book for either breakfast, lunch or dinner, such is its popularity. Reservations are essential, even days or weeks ahead.
Waves of excitement consume me when I'm booked in for a meal here because I know I'm in for a gustatory treat.
If you want to impress a friend, client or that someone special, this is definitely the place to do it.
