“Beware the packages.. not so groovy”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

I’d booked onto the 13 day Sparkling Chardonnay package to end my month long trip around the east coast as it covered lots of things I wanted to and had heard good things about the company. I had to book it a couple of months ago so I could make sure I got a reasonably cheap flight back home to Perth in a flight sale. About a week ago I realised when checking through the itinerary (which was sent a couple of weeks after I booked – so had already had sorted the flight) that there was a break in the 13 days – making the trip actually 14 days despite it saying NO WHERE on the site or when booking - and so wouldn’t meet my flight out of Alice on time and have had to pay $200 to change to a day later – so I decided to cancel the trip. Called and was begrudgingly offered a refund after being told repeatedly there were breaks in a trip (understood perfectly but just would have liked to have been told before). Queried as there were mentions of the third party booking site retaining a fee – but was reassured that I would be refunded in full.

Week later – still no refund so called the company back and it seemed my refund hadn’t been processed and was told it would be done now. Bit late as I’d being expecting the money sooner and have had to book various things on my UK cards at an extra cost with bank charges but anyway. Was not pleased at all however to be called back and told that the third party would be retaining 5% (of over $1500…) and I’d been told falsely that the money would be returned in full. If I’d cancelled the trip out of choice I would have accepted it, but I feel it is unfair to have been passed along this charge when this problem arose because Groovy Grape’s website was misleading and the significant delay of the refund is forcing me to use UK accounts rather that my Australian at an extra cost. Was really looking forward to the trip and I am so disappointed I had to change my plans completely and have lost money due to something that could have been prevented by such a simple note on the website when booking.

Dear Claire F,

Our Package Deals are separate tours booked together to receive a discounted price, allowing flexibility for our customers to explore the cities in between tours if they wish. This is made evident on the Package Deals page of our website where it states in bold: “Please note: Accommodations in Adelaide between tours is at your own expense. Packages are combinations of separate tours and can depart differently than specified, to allow for extra free days free days in Adelaide.” When proceeding to book via our Online Booking Store, it also states clearly under the Tour Description: “Firstly check availability for all tours and specify departure dates in the note section. Date selected is for Great Ocean Road (MEL-ADL).” I am not sure that you followed this instruction before booking, as you would have noticed at this point that the last segment of your package did not depart successively.

Upon checking our email correspondence with you, I found your claim of 2 weeks between communication of your itinerary to be exaggerated as it was indeed sent less than 48 hours after your booking was made.

On behalf of Groovy Grape Getaways, I would like to apologise for the delay in your refund and the wrong information you received upon calling our office to cancel. Our Online Booking Store is operated by a third party provider and there is a 5% booking surcharge which is clearly stated upon booking, a fact the reservations agent you spoke with was unaware of and will most definitely receive extra training on the procedures relating to our Online Booking Store.

It is unfortunate that your travel plans did not permit you to take the Sparkling Chardonnay Package with us, as I am sure that your review of our company would have been quite different.

Happy travels,

Kristy Cutts

“The true outback experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

I had a fantastic tour with Groovy Grapes travelling with a small group from Alice Springs, in the center of Australia, to Adelaide, in the South. We hiked quite a lot, and slept in sleeping bags and SWAGS outside in the desert. We were lucky to have a great group, but we also had an amazing guide called Daniel who knew the bush in and out and loved his job. He gave us a real feel for the Australian outback!

“Not quite up to expectations”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 January 2012

Spent a lot of time on transit on the 2-day kangaroo island tour. It is a big island and by the time you add travel from Adelaide to ferry, then the ferry ride, its becomes a lot of time in a confined space. It's a very rugged place, quite desolate so not quite as visually stunning as I expected. Our host probably could have put a bit more effort into hosting us; he seemed a bit knackered, weary or perhaps had been hosting this trip for too long and was a bit bored of it. Either way, he didn't really add anything to the trip other than driving services.

Overall, still interesting and great wildlife spotting, but would probably have preferred to spend the time touring wineries.

Dear Travelbec,

Thanks for your honest review. From your experience, you can see why we don't operate 1 day tours on Kangaroo Island. The island is 150km in length which proves to be a challenge logistically even for our 2 & 3 day tours, but it makes up for it with its abundance of wildlife and quality of beaches - Vivonne Bay was voted the best beach in Australia 2007.

I am concerned to hear that your tour guide did not perform to our usual standards. Our tour guides are expected to share their passion for the places we visit, be interactive and informative, captivating their passengers with their fun and adventurous spirits.

I would really appreciate if you could email me directly at: marketing@groovygrape.com.au to provide the departure date and/or name of your tour guide, so we can improve the experience for our future passengers visiting Kangaroo Island.

Happy travels,

“The Rock Patrol - amazing week, so much fun!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 December 2011

I just got back from the 6day/5night Rock Patrol tour from Adelaide to Alice Springs. It's been one of the best things I've done in Australia so far.

I just loved seeing the landscape change from the coast to the red centre. The landscape around Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon is stunning.

You do need to be prepared for a lot of driving especially in the first few days but our guide Penny had plenty of games prepared to keep us entertained and stopped regularly to give us a break. The food was absolutely amazing. Much better than I would have expected from a camping trip. I also loved sleeping in swags under the stars, much better than being in a tent. The campsites were all pretty good standard as well. I was also able to learn a lot about the area and the aboriginal culture which was good.

The tour was totally all inclusive. Penny had plenty of snacks for us on those long bus journeys and all entry fees are included. The only thing I paid for in the 6 days was my alcohol.

It's a really full on week and you have to be prepared to take part in the hikes and lend a hand with cooking etc. but it all adds to the experience. I was exhausted by the end of the week but it was totally worth it!

Dear Kirsten,

Thanks so much for your review. Not sure if you knew, but this was actually the very first Rock Patrol Tour that Penny guided herself! Our tour guides really make an effort to entertain their groups and give regular breaks on those days where there is a lot of driving between attractions.
Groovy Grape Getaways prides itself on the quality, variety and freshness of food provided and the fact that we encourage the help of our travellers in the preparation makes the meals a group bonding experience and something everyone can feel proud of.
