“Big Plates, disappointingly little food”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2011

Our waiter was very good, knowledgable on the menu (both food and wine), able to discuss any item without hesitation. Don't get me wrong, the food was tasty, but even for a degustation, there was laughably little. This may be a personal matter, but i was super disappointed to see only two pieces of tortellini - yes only two, in the middle of my big white plate and they weren't any super sized or even larger than normal tortellinis. Similarly another course consisted of a shotglass sized portion of a swordfish something-or-other with watermelon salsa which would suffice a child (with well-developed taste) of about 2. By the time the lamb came i was starving and i'm afraid three little slices perched in the middle still left us wanting. Don't get me wrong, all this food was delicious, but isn't food also supposed to fill you up? Not to bloat, but to satisfy at least. Now you're probably thinking i'm a glutton...and maybe a fattie - not true, my husband and i are slight people, I'm 5 ft 2 and 52 kg. I don't watch masterchef, gordon ramsay or any other cooking show and i dont subscribe to the notion that to eat good food you have to be served teeny tiny morsels. I should have listened to my husband that night and went to Gauchos for a steak.

“Awful service, sloppy dressed and too...”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 July 2010

Awful service, sloppy dressed and too casually spoken for a fine dining restaurant. They dragged tables all around us- rearranging the room for the next day whilst we were still eating!! Food is way overpriced for tiny serves and the atmosphere could be lovely but seemed empty. Don't go there. I've even written a letter of complaint since we spent $400 there and have had no response! Very unprofessional!! Disappointing place to surprise our friends with!!

“Excellent innnovative cuisine- worth a visit for lunch or dinner”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2010

The Wine Underground offers excellent and innovative food.

The restaurant is in the basement; they have a ground floor wine bar and wine retailing shop as well.

The proprietors have a passion for food and drink, which comes across very clearly.

It's worth joining their mailing list for advance notice of special lunches and dinners.

Highly recommended.

“great little wine bar”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 November 2009

We found The Wine Underground through the Melbourne Age newspaper Good Food Guide. We arrived around noon for lunch so the 'underground' basement restaurant was closed, but the street-level bistro was open. We got a table right at the front by the opened windows so we had a great view of the activity on the street. The wine list is extensive and we chose a bottle of Barossa rose' that was on the bin-end list. The list contains a lot of South Australian wines, many from around Adelaide, but also wines from elsewhere. One wine on the list was a blend containing an obscure grape we had never heard of, so we asked our waiter about the grape. He didn't know the grape either, so he went and Googled it and gave us the information about it. Very nice touch. For lunch we had a sampler platter of pate', oysters Rockefeller, and another thing or two. It turned out to be not quite enough for the two of us, so we got another slab of the delicious pate'. We asked the manager if he could recommend a couple of good McLaren Vale wineries to visit, so he took us downstairs to see the restaurant and beautiful wine room. He had only recenly moved to Adelaide from Western Australia and had not visited many McLaren Vale wineries, but recommended a couple he had either visited or heard about. Not the cheapest of lunches, but very enjoyable.
