“Oh, how things can change!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 July 2011

A few weeks ago, my husband and I with another couple, had dinner at "The Wine Underground" and enjoyed it so much, that my husband took me there for lunch very recently.
What a disappointment. The entrees were lovely, but after waiting 45mins and even then had to ask for them, we realised that the service was very slack. By the way, the restaurant wasn't full at all. The main course came immediately as we put our forks down and before our entree plates were cleared away.
My husband had salmon and it was over cooked and a very small portion. Mine was a special, grilled chicken with other components, risotto. Where was the chicken......there was none! I sent it back and waited another 20mins and in the meantime my husbands meal was going cold and had almost finished it by the time mine came back out (not much chicken at all).
They didn't charge for mine and thank goodness we BYO, otherwise it would have been an expensive lunch on top of our disappointment.
Sorry, we wont be back.

“Wow”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 June 2011

We went more recently to the wine underground, with some friends. We went with pizzas and wine. The service was friendly, attentive and knowledgeable about the wine. We ate the pizzas with our hands, they were a bit hard to cut, but they were delicious. We enjoyed the ambiance of the restaurant and had a great time.

Staff had little or no idea of menu, service very slow and poor. Small serve. Out of stock of wine chosen , unable to offer chosen main coarse as they had run out.

“My Kitchen Rules”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 June 2011

Was a little like the TV show. It seems like all the restaurants now go for presentation rather than quantity. So if you are after a pub meal then go to a pub. This is not the place for that. The meal is presented as one would expect from a place that advertises fine dining. From the time we entered the premises we knew it was going to be an enjoyable evening. Thank you Rebecca. Her knowledge of the dishes and what was being served as well as the wines was acceptable and her demeanor is an asset they need to keep.

The lamb was cooked to perfection and no one complained about the duck so all in all the food tasted great. SA wines are the best, so you cant have any complaints in that area and the Coopers beer went down a treat.

Prices on the menu are restaurant prices so if you do go remember once again this is not a pub dont expect a schnitzel.

“Big Plates, disappointingly little food”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2011

Our waiter was very good, knowledgable on the menu (both food and wine), able to discuss any item without hesitation. Don't get me wrong, the food was tasty, but even for a degustation, there was laughably little. This may be a personal matter, but i was super disappointed to see only two pieces of tortellini - yes only two, in the middle of my big white plate and they weren't any super sized or even larger than normal tortellinis. Similarly another course consisted of a shotglass sized portion of a swordfish something-or-other with watermelon salsa which would suffice a child (with well-developed taste) of about 2. By the time the lamb came i was starving and i'm afraid three little slices perched in the middle still left us wanting. Don't get me wrong, all this food was delicious, but isn't food also supposed to fill you up? Not to bloat, but to satisfy at least. Now you're probably thinking i'm a glutton...and maybe a fattie - not true, my husband and i are slight people, I'm 5 ft 2 and 52 kg. I don't watch masterchef, gordon ramsay or any other cooking show and i dont subscribe to the notion that to eat good food you have to be served teeny tiny morsels. I should have listened to my husband that night and went to Gauchos for a steak.
