So I admit, I read all the reviews and started to question if I had made the right choice to go there for the final leg of our honeymoon. I was very close to changing the destination after reading some really negative reviews.
We arrived at the island and were highly amused when our luggage was brought to us on an outdoor trolley and you had to find your suitcases amongst all of the other bags. We were met by a velet who took us to our apartment - Shoreline 24, which was just lovely, and after seeing that, I knew that we had made the right choice.
We spent our mornings on Catseye beach (which is a small beach), and the afternoons by our apartment pool. We were lucky, as the apartment came with its own golf buggy so could explore the island. The island also offered a bus service that drops off and picks up at all the major hotels and the town centre.
The only tour we did was a Fly/Cruise to the Great Barrier reef, which is highly recommended. The tours can be booked once you are on the island at the hotels. My only negative comment on the tour was we wished we had done the Fly there and Fly back option as the views from the helicopter were out of this world. You will not get a chance to see the reef from the boat that you do from the air.
If you are expecting not to spend too much money, then maybe the Hamilton Isalnd is not the place to go. It is VERY pricey. As we had an apartment, we shopped at the General Store and found it advantageous to try to select items that were produced either in Australia, NZ or Asia to try to keep the cost of food down. We ate at Chinese Resturant that was nice, but again was pricey and was NOT airconditioned! If you want to eat outside, book in advance, we did not and spent the evening eating our food drenched in sweat!
I honestly have nothing negative to say about the Hamilton Island. My husband and I debated about whether our wonderful experience was because we lucked out at the time of year we chose, if it was because we chose the apartment over the hotel (we spent the last day at the hotel pool, and the pool was very over bearing with all the people), or if the reviews we read were just too harsh. Either way, I would highly recommend going.

My three sisters and I visited HI in early Dec 07 and had an absolute blast!! It was just what we needed; we left the kids home with the guys and off we went for three nights and four FANTASTIC days!

Overall, the whole experience was wonderful. Sure, it's definately a tourist island and not really a secluded, quiet escape, but it is definately relaxing and so beautiful - even better than the pictures. Being a tourist island means that they have really perfected the whole touristy thing - everything is very convenient, well run, clean and efficient. The staff were (generally) exceptionally friendly.

We left Adelaide at 7:50am (via Bris), and within minutes of getting off the plane our luggage was loaded into a waiting coach. We arrived at the hotel and had checked in (make sure you request an early check in) by 11:45am. No hassell whatsoever. We were really glad that we had decided not to go onto another island, because it would have cut into our 'holiday' time.

All up, including airfares, accomodation, cruise to Reefworld, sunset kayak, target shooting, meals and buggy hire it came to about $1400.00 each - not bad!! And we didn't 'skimp' on a single thing.

We stayed at the Whitsunday Holiday Apartments which were clean, quiet, well maintained and quite spacious with a good a/c. It had a KS bed and three duvans (which are like couches, but double as beds). If you can, make sure you pay the extra for a sea view (not just for the awesome view) but because the garden view rooms don't get serviced daily, and it was great to come back to a clean tidy room each day.

The beds certainly weren't as comfy as home, but hotel beds never are! The view from the hotel was amazing, but to be honest we hardly spent any time at all in the room, as there was just so much to do. Probably the only thing that could have been better was the location - next time we would probably like to stay a bit closer to the marina, because we found that we ended up there quite a bit. The Palm Bungalows looked quite cute and had a better location.

We went on a sunset kayak which was lovely (and not too strenuous!). I think it was about $20.00 and very good value. The water is just so clean and a beautiful aqua colour. At the half way point everyone stops and you're given a glass of bubbly (although to be honest, the wine was a bit of a cheapy!).

Reefworld was fun (a little bit touristy though I must admit, but I didn't mind at all; at least it was run professionally) and the staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. When one of my sisters felt a little seasick the staff seemed genuinely concerned. The snorkelling is great fun and the stinger suits aren't really that bad!

We hired a buggy which I totally recommend, because although most things are within walking distance (and apart from the fact that it's lots of fun!), too much walking in the oppressively muggy heat isn't fun all the time!

There are several beautiful swimming pools everywhere (but none have fences, so you would need to be absolutely vigilant if you took young chidren), and we spent quite a bit of time swimming. The beach looked great but we didn't go swimming for fear of stingers, although there were lots of people (and tiny little children) in the water without stinger suits. To be honest, I wouldn't risk it (even if the risk is very remote) because a bite could really ruin your whole holiday.

I Couldn't believe how many people were sunbaking everywhere!! And, I have never seen so many sunburt people in one place before, so a word of warning, make sure you put on tons of sunscreen regularly. Heaps. Don't forget. The sun is a lot harsher than in Adelaide.

Cocktails at the lookout was really nice, you don't need to be there right on 4:30 pm as we found that it wen't till around 7pm (from memory). Very informal and a great pre-dinner drinks location.

We had the free photo shoot done with HI Photography and they turned out quite nice. The prints were very reasonably priced, about $20.00 for an 8 x 10.

Crazy karaoke on Sat nights is exactly that and definatly worth going to!!

About the food now, FANTASTIC!! Romano's and the Beach House were AWESOME!! Maybe we were just lucky, but I would go back to HI just for those two places! And, we all eat out regularly, so our standards are very high.

Pasta at Romano's was about $32.00, but it wasn't your everyday pasta, it was like no pasta I have ever had before (in a good way) and the location is lovely.

By far our fave meal (of all time!) was at the Beach House. My goodness, it was absolutely divine, out of this world and the best meal I have ever, ever, had. Everything was so perfect, the meal, the service, the ambience, etc. etc., I really didn't care that I paid $52.00 for a steak. It was so worth it, and if I'd paid $80.00 for the steak I still would go back again. It's a very romantic place, and even though they were fully booked, it was very quiet and peaceful - you could see the waves lapping on the beach. A table on the balcony is really nice, and I think it's worthwhile booking well in advance so you don't miss our.

We found that Toucan's was best for breakfast, not as much variety as the Reef restaurant, but the chef was friendlier and it wasn't as busy - so a bit more relaxing. Toucans is more of a family restaurant and at lunch time it gets a lot busier. Still nice enough though.

We weren't overly impressed with the pizza place on the marina, really overloaded with chesse, so wouldn't recommend it and wouldn't eat there again.

Overall, we didn't find the food and drink prices too bad - after all, you are on an island, so you need to expect that things are going to be more expensive. But, even though Romano's and the Beach House were expensive, it was well worth it. If you wanted to do something cheap, you could buy groceries from the little supermarket, which wasn't much dearer than the 7-day supermarkets in Adel.

If I had a choice, I would rather 4 days on HI and really 'live it up' and do / eat whatever than do it on a budget over 7 days. But that's just personally.

Anyway, perfect place, perfect holiday, absolutely recommend it for anyone who wants to have a great time with good, professional service and no hassels.

The best thing about Hamilton Island is that there's an airport there - SO YOU CAN GET OUT!!! We are a family of 5 - 3 kids aged 14, 11 and 8 - travelling in Queensland in December 2007. We chose Hamilton Island because we had 3 days to fill in before returning to Sydney and we could fly direct from there to Sydney. We stayed in the Reef View Hotel and in fairness the rooms were very nice, but expensive at AUS$900 per night for 2 rooms. Unfortunately, it rained the first 2 days and that never helps the situation. However, the resort couldn't cope very well with the rain - go-karting and mini-golf were waterloged for starters. There were also minor irritations such as not being able to hire a buggy for 5 people (we should definitely have stopped at 2 children!) In any case, there were none available to hire. There's a free bus service around the island but it doesn't come often enough and many people couldn't get on even though the next bus was 40-50 minutes later. But overall, the thing that really got to us was the totally unhelpful and inflexible attitude of the people working there. Our final straw came on the second night. It started with a disastrous meal in the Red Emperor Chinese restaurant. We waited so long for our main courses that we lost our appetites. We then went to the icecream parlour about 9.30pm. The girl served us but made it clear we were her last customers and she refused to serve anyone else. Several disappointed customers left empty-handed. They need a good manager! At this stage we needed a stiff drink, so we left the kids back to their rooms, but the bar in our hotel had very loud music that didn't appeal to us at all. We went to the Beach Club across the road but were refused service because we weren't residents there. The only 2 customers at the bar were almost as embarrassed as we were by the girl's intransigence. We left in a rage swearing never to come to Hamilton Island again. We went straight back to our hotel and booked the next flight out the following morning, a day earlier than planned. Hallelujah!
Well done to Manta Ray restaurant for the excellent pizzas though - the only decent meal we had in 2 days.

We flew from Sydney to Hamilton Island and stayed 3 days. We dived in the Great Barrier Reef, petted all different types of fish and swam in seas that can only be dreamed of.
If you go to Australia, I recommend Hamilton Island as a place you must visit.

HAMILTON ISLAND
My partner and I just came back from an awesome holiday at the Whitsundays..it truely is picture perfect! We stayed at Hamilton Island which is beautiful but very expensive depending on how you plan it...we stayed at the Reef View Hotel and did restaraunts..and thanks to tripadvisor requested a higher level floor and refurbished room and our room and view was picture perfect!. Hamilton is very much the family and honeymooners type holiday..
We did a day trip on the Fantaseas Ferry to Reefworld..and seeing the Great Barrier Reef is definetly a must on the to do list! if you can afford it the helicopter ride is worthy of taking your breath away-Hardy Reef and famous heart reef just beautiful! we spent some days on hamilton lazing about at the pool bar and strolling around beautiful Catseye Beach..after a few days we got over our lazy days and we were pumped to get on our 2 day 2 night booked Powerplay cruise at Airlie Beach.
POWERPLAY CRUISE
Finally we came to the day of our Powerplay boat trip...the catamaran boat is beautiful, just enough room..our little private cabin had a comfy bed and share Toilet/Basin/Shower.The crew were amazing-Paula, Clem,Phil and Jet always did everything to make our trip perfect..hop out of the water after a dive and there'd be a scrumptious lunch waiting for you.. Phil was an excellent dive instructor..if it wasn't for his enthusiasm and determination I doubt my partner and I would have tried scuba diving for the first time ever let alone gone suba diving 3 times! the scuba diving wasn't as hard as I anticipated...if you learn to relax!most of the crowd were young, fun, laidback yet mature..
The arranged activities suited us perfect a mix of action and relaxing inbetween, nothing like going for a dive and coming back to a boat and jumping into a nice warm hot tub watching the sun go down..what a life! Im not a morning person but every morning we got up early it was so worth it! being one of the first to mark your footprints on Whitehaven beach and seeing the fish and turtles out and about in the morning ..excellent! At the end of our trip we did 2 x scuba dives at Hook Island, one at Hayman Island and swam at whitehaven beach on Whitsunday island!
we had some awesome added bonuses to our trip such as seeing humpback whales on a couple of occasions in particular one occasion a whale swam right near the boat- that was unforgettable! we saw a sea eagle pick up a fish out the water right near us while snorkelling, saw turtles, saw stingrays and 2 baby reef sharks at Whitehaven..the weather was picture perefect every time! beautiful sunsets and stunning stars in the sky!
not sure if I covered everything as I still cant believe how much we done and how great the trip was..we couldn't stop rambling on about our trip when we got back to hamilton island let alone to our poor friends and family!
