“Great View”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 April 2007

We stayed at the Reef View in late March.
After reading posts on this forum, we asked for a renovated room, there where none available. The room on the 7th floor was not renovated but much better than I expected. The views where wonderful & the room very spacious. & clean. There is nothing to fault the Hotel with, our room was always clean, the lifts fast, fantastic views & a cold pool.
Our stay of 6 days was broken down into eating, drinking, relaxing & playing in the ocean. The prices are comparable to Inner Sydney without the hectic lifestyle.
By getting the cheap Jet star flights to the Island it made the holiday not too budget blowing. All in all a great getaway.

“Great Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 April 2007

It's possible that other rooms are not up to standard, which seems to be the main complaint of some reviews. I can only speak for our own experience and really can't find any reason to give it a rating other than Excellent.

Yes, it's expensive. Perhaps as a regular traveller to New York I've become immune to that. But it delivered everything we could expect.

The room was clean, spacious and modern. A family would have been comfortable enough in it, and for a couple it was more than enough. Everything worked. The TV was a little prehistoric, but why would you want to spend time watching Australian TV anyway?

We didn't pay the extra for the views from the top floor (tip: you can see this by riding the glass lift to the 19th floor - or just walking out to the beach). It didn't seem to matter - our 2nd floor room was still quiet and the view was of palm tree tops.

The service was fine - perfectly friendly and everything got done. Most of the staff are young and keen, if inexperienced. There does seem to be an absolute policy of not allowing early check-ins, but there is an "arrivals lounge", where you can shower, change and lock your stuff away. Just make sure you have what you need for the day in hand luggage and you'll be fine.

Pretty much everything on the island is owned by the same company, so you won't find much competition here. It's pricey by Australian standards, but given that everything has to be shipped in and the relatively low quantities, that's to be expected. And there are a few stupid ideas - $4.50 for a decent coffee with the "free" breakfast is annoying. Looking at the final bill, though, I honestly can't say that it was poor value - overall it seemed better than Ireland or Southern England. And you could always save money by getting at least one meal from the supermarket.

Had we thought we were going to a classic couples' honeymoon resort, we might have been disappointed. This place is busier and more - well - approximate than that. If you treat it as a pleasant base for exploring the Whitsundays, you will have a great time.

“Beware!”

Where do I start! It seems I didn't read enough reviews and didn't request a renovated room! We arrived to something that resembled a 70s package hotel in the Costa Del Sol in Spain. A 3 star which was a 4 star when it was built in 1990. Seems the Spanish hotel rating is the same here, not what you would usually expect from an Australian hotel. Our room looked like the only thing that had changed was the bedding! Very decent size, nice white bedding which seemed fairly new, but I don't think the beds, units and especially clothes drawers/wardrobe and bathroom had been updated since they opened...which the drawers didn't do, open! The views are magnificent and is the only reason why you would stay at this hotel. The pool is small for the size of the hotel and no where near enough sunbeds. I think Hamilton Island as a whole is very over rated, and definately over priced for what it really is. It seems to be marketed to all types especially families, and most people look like they had morgaged the house to be there, which is probably why they didn't think the food was so bad! Very expensive for what is on offer. VEGETARIANS BEWARE...the only Chinese restuarant in the world which does not cater for anyone who doesn't eat chicken, beef or pork. The staff seem to be amazed you should ask such a thing! The island has some amazing real estate which can be seen on one of the many buggys to rent, and a great fun time too! To be honest, pay the money to get out to one of the many amazing Whitsunday Islands, Hamilton is commerical and if you are looking for a sun fillled island experience, go elsewhere. Hamilton Island know they have a captive audience, and take advantage of it! In future, I will go back to Hamilton Island, but only because I can fly into the island, and immediately sail out to someone amazing and more beautiful!

“Great views!!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 March 2007

This a is a great week-end hotel, for a three night stay. It is a tall tower block overlooking the bay and the Whitsunday islands. We had a 12th floor room – and the views were truly stunning. We spent more time in our room that we normally would just to sit on the balcony and watch that view and the world go by.

The rooms are large by any modern standard. We had a recently re-furbished room. The bathroom was in great condition and had a separate toilet and shower. Pity that the re-modelling had not extended to some of the built in furniture, which looked very dated and shabby. The beds were comfortable and certainly offered us a great night’s sleep.

Don’t know whether they were parrots, parakeets or macaws – but the big white birds with the yellow tuft of feathers on their heads have the potential to be a real nuisance. Too many previous gusts have been feeding them and they are certainly bold enough to come into your room through the balcony windows – keep them tightly closed if you are not in your room and close them before you go into the bathroom. Don’t leave anything out on the balcony that they can steal – food or otherwise.

Everything on the island seems to be operated by “Hamilton Enterprises” and whilst efficient you are just left with the impression that they don’t try quite hard enough; and that everything is priced just to the limit before you begin to think you are being ripped off. Service is just good enough. We had a lot of trouble getting early access to our room – and all of the excuses ultimately turned out to be not quite accurate!! You similarly don’t get enough choice through real completion for excursions, restaurants, etc.

It was a great three days – because of those spectacular views. But I’ll try a different island next time I go back.

“Great Hotel with a wow view but must check in over floor 16!!”

We were advised on trip advisor by a previous guests to ask for room 1609 so we did and were so pleased to find out at check in that we had been allocated this room, all room above floor 15 have been up-graded with flat screened TV and great furnishings lovely lighting and a view to die for, so be advised ASK FOR A ROOM ON OR ABOVE THE 16TH FLOOR....
The Island is very pretty and green probably due so the rain! but we were very luck and had great weather in March (the rainey season) we ate at Mariners Fish Restaurant very good also the Chinese Restaurant Red Emperor very good food a little dated furnishings.
A must do (if you can afford it) is to have dinner a the Beach Club and ask for a poolside table the food was the best also service 10/10
We also took the Reef Odyssey boat 3 days around the Whitsunday Islands a piece of paradise ....
