We stayed here for 3 days over Xmas, so my review is a little mixed with the cons probably there just because this time of the year showed them up...
First off the location is good, in the restaurant street of Townsville and a short walk over the river to the city, but my, talk about a dead city centre over Xmas! Just nothing open at all.
We arrived late on the afternoon of Xmas Eve and soon realized that we should have grocery shopped for this time of the year, as the Gateway does not have a cafe or restaurant and there was very little open over this break so very difficult to find a meal especially breakfast. Nothing open anywhere on Boxing Day.
We had booked 2 hotel rooms, both rooms were spacious and had a kitchen sink and bench, but why no microwave and/or toaster?? Sure it was a hotel room but then no eating facilities at all within the complex, and I for one loathe paying silly high prices somewhere for a slice of toast and a coffee. There were 2 wine glasses, 2 mugs and 3 glasses so forget about asking anyone in for a drink unless they bring there own crockery.
Now over Xmas there was no room cleaning service at all, fine by me, but why leave such meager supplies for such a long break..surely the tea/coffee/sugar could have been stacked up instead of 4 teabags, 3 coffee sachets, and four sugars and 5 tiny milks?? For 3 days? Just plain mean especially considering there is no supermarket close by or for that matter even open, apart from a tiny "corner" store with limited supplies at exorbitant prices. Sure you can go downstairs and ask for more but why should you, especially considering there was only 1 person on the desk at any given time and if a few people were waiting to checkin then be prepared for a lengthy wait.
One of the rooms had no hot water for the 3 days in the bathroom, hot water in the kitchen tap though..strange! Got away with it..just..as it was the middle of summer, but barely tepid water is just not nice really. Toilet seat in one room threatened to topple off everytime you sat on it..wrong seat for the type of toilet I suspect!
Bed, king size and very comfy, nice little balcony with a nice view over Palmer St and out to the river. Coffee table and 2 chairs, a desk and chair. Small flatscreen TV which has been mounted on the wall and has pipes down the wall encasing the cords..doesn`t look nice and a bit silly with a TV stand under it.
There was no pay tv at all in either room despite being touted as having it, and yes we did try all the buttons in case it had been "lost"..
Pool is very small for such a big complex, and was extremely crowded on the afternoon I went down..and only TWO lounges to sit on?? Everyone had to put towels and belongings on the small pathway or over the rails. Who on earth decided on a tiny pool in a tropical city??
