“Good location, but...”

My partner and I stayed at the Medina for two nights over New Years to get a bit of time away as the holiday we'd previously planned was cancelled due to the Highway washing out. I booked online and check in went smoothly, though there was no room in the hotel carpark available (understandably - it was New Years Eve and the hotel was booked to capacity).

The room was great, we had a Premier Studio and it was spacious enough for the two of us and inclided a sink area and microwave, which was great. The bathroom was huge though not very well laid out as you had to twist to miss the toilet when stepping out of the shower (while you're wet - not a good idea). The only downside to the room itself was that it was HOT and stuffy when we checked in. I understand this is common practice with the hotel as the directions to cool the room down were in the book in the room but frankly, this is Darwin, in the middle of the Wet Season and it's just really not good enough.

The air con had fits the whole time we were there, it would cool the room for two hours approximately then it would stop cooling and the room would get stifling hot, despite adjusting the temperature repeatedly (according to instructions in the book). This is not really what you want when its 35+ degrees outside! The second night we stayed was even worse, we both woke around 1am sweating and checked the thermostat - 28 degrees! My partner was up for most of the night and had to resort to cold showers to get his temperature down to even close to bearable. Again, not good enough.

The restaurant was fantastic. We visited on the night of the 1st and the place wasn't too busy. The food was fantastic and the service was great as well, above the average of the "service" you get around town.

Other gripes were:
No pool towels available - we had to use the towels from our room which left them damp later when we had showers.
The hallways were also stuffy and hot, it didn't seem like there was air conditioning at all except for in the lobby.
There was a bad smell of rubbish on the first floor around the lift area. Gross and really not good enough for a 4.5 hotel such as this.
It took longer than the time advised to release the authorisation on my credit card and when I contacted my bank they advised me that the hotel hadn't even reversed the authoriation yet. I called the hotel and this was rectified that day.

Overall, the hotel was OK but I probably wouldn't stay at the Medina again.

“Terrific experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2012

We just came home from our trip to Darwin. We had a terrific experience at the Medina Waterfront. Thankyou to past reviews we asked for the 4th floor and a balcony and this was great. The harbour view was well worth it. We satyed in a one bedroom unit.Everyone from the front desk to the housekeeping were very friendly and always helpful. One night we ordered a very late room service and they rang to tell us they'd had a slight hiccup. When the food arrived it was not what we ordered and we were told the depp fryer was broken. They gave us 2 pizzas and the night manager rang me to tell me that the meals were complimentary. We were very impressed. Room service food was very good. Great pork belly and salt and pepopper squid salad. we didnt do breakfast at the hotel because of other reviews. Instead we went to Fiddlers pub for brekkie. YUM (Just a short stroll down by the waterfront). Bed was very comfy only problem was very thin pillows. I asked housekeeping for another pillow and she went and got me one straight away. we have stayed in many places in Darwin and we will definitely go back to Medina

Room Tip: Not all rooms have a balcony so always ask.

“fix the carpark issues”

we stayed for a couple of nights in mid december in an appartment. we are locals so the heat shouldn't be too much of a problem but felt the halls and main part of the hotel too hot. the halls also smelt a little funny. the a/c was fine in the lounge area but not in the bedroom. i was also surprised to find the housekeeping doesn't happen until late afternoon, a most inconvenient time. we had breakfast at curves both mornings which wasn't bad, they seemed to keep up with the diners, but once again too hot. my biggest gripe is with the carparking arrangements. they advertise that you can get a pass for the carpark but this isn't the case. you take a ticket when you enter the carpark and then you have to go to a paypoint and claim for a lost ticket at a cost of $16 which you will be reimbursed for at checkout. that means if you are coming and going a bit it's going to be quite a bit of money outlayed. their ecuse was that they didn't own the carpark, it's owned by darwin city council. it's quite an inconvenience that the customer shouldn't have to be concerned about, especially when they advertise that you can get a pass and because of this i won't be going back or recommending them to anyone

“Top location, some disappointments”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2012

We booked our NYE at MGDW way back in August and looked forward to our stay with our two young kids (both under 5), and extended family.

Overall we enjoyed our stay but it was not without its disappointments.

The biggest disappointment was Curve restaurant. On Jan 1st our families hit Curve for a hearty breakfast. The large serving trays were mostly empty. No scrambled eggs. No bacon. No hash browns. 5 poached eggs & baked beans remained and more diners hit Curve for breakfast. We started with what we could and waited for additional food. And we waited. And we waited. It took 4 visits back to counter before food was readily available. In the case of the scrambled eggs, it was rushed and sloppy. Those at our table who got servings stopped eating once tasted. We complained to restaurant staff who were quick to point out only one Chef was working and it was a $15 meal. It was lost on the poor girl that we were customers nonetheless and looked forward to service. With thanks, another staff member appeared, apologised & refunded the cost of our breakfast. A gesture that was appreciated. The staff member also encouraged us to submit a comment as feedback when checking out.

We asked for a feedback form when checking out but one could not be found. We looked on website and a feedback form could not be found. We sent a couple email. No replies.

We're not sure how much feedback actually gets back to head office so by way of other feedback, other disappointments with MGDW are:-

1. Warmth of and smell in the corridors. Smell was either heavy sweat or mildew and it was certainly unpleasant walking in the corridors. Thankfully the rooms were unaffected.
2. Our room, smelt of stale cigarettes. We appreciate this comes back to actions on part of previous occupants but if we book a non-smoking room we would like to receive a non-smoking room.
3. We folded up the sof bed on morning of checkout and found a large copper plumbing pipe under the mattress. The pipe, about a foot long looked to have been there for quite a while. Our youngest slept on the mattress so he wouldn't have felt it but it is bizarre it has gone undiscovered.
4. No main door lock or latch at adult height. It is worrying that our four year old could open the main door and leave the room.

As positives, we did enjoy the spaciousness of our room, facilities within and general surrounds. The reception staff were in high demand but were great and deserve a pat on the back.

Curve restaurant however is really letting the team down though and needs attention. We spent close to the whole day at the Waterfront and noted Curve was largely empty whilst other restaurants were packed with waiting lines.

“new yr joke”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 January 2012

spent new yr eve at the medina with the family for fire works in the waterfront.
we are locals and thought it would be a good idea to get a great view of the fireworks.
room was ok, but the restaurant was a joke, tried to get room service but the phone kept ringing out, after 5 trys i went down as the wife was wanting a drink before dinner, the place was a disaster, there was a long line at the bar and an angry overworked girl trying to make drinks, as i waited the phone rang out 6 times as they were too understaffed to pick it up.
we went out for dinner as the place looked a mess and those sitting there looked as if it was going to be a big wait, i saw 3 tables walk out angry while i was drinking my long time coming drink.
wont go back next new yr!
