My partner and I stayed at the Medina for two nights over New Years to get a bit of time away as the holiday we'd previously planned was cancelled due to the Highway washing out. I booked online and check in went smoothly, though there was no room in the hotel carpark available (understandably - it was New Years Eve and the hotel was booked to capacity).
The room was great, we had a Premier Studio and it was spacious enough for the two of us and inclided a sink area and microwave, which was great. The bathroom was huge though not very well laid out as you had to twist to miss the toilet when stepping out of the shower (while you're wet - not a good idea). The only downside to the room itself was that it was HOT and stuffy when we checked in. I understand this is common practice with the hotel as the directions to cool the room down were in the book in the room but frankly, this is Darwin, in the middle of the Wet Season and it's just really not good enough.
The air con had fits the whole time we were there, it would cool the room for two hours approximately then it would stop cooling and the room would get stifling hot, despite adjusting the temperature repeatedly (according to instructions in the book). This is not really what you want when its 35+ degrees outside! The second night we stayed was even worse, we both woke around 1am sweating and checked the thermostat - 28 degrees! My partner was up for most of the night and had to resort to cold showers to get his temperature down to even close to bearable. Again, not good enough.
The restaurant was fantastic. We visited on the night of the 1st and the place wasn't too busy. The food was fantastic and the service was great as well, above the average of the "service" you get around town.
Other gripes were:
No pool towels available - we had to use the towels from our room which left them damp later when we had showers.
The hallways were also stuffy and hot, it didn't seem like there was air conditioning at all except for in the lobby.
There was a bad smell of rubbish on the first floor around the lift area. Gross and really not good enough for a 4.5 hotel such as this.
It took longer than the time advised to release the authorisation on my credit card and when I contacted my bank they advised me that the hotel hadn't even reversed the authoriation yet. I called the hotel and this was rectified that day.
Overall, the hotel was OK but I probably wouldn't stay at the Medina again.
