Good place to stay overall, met some nice people.

Beware of the longtermers...VERY clicky. Almost immpossible to get involved or get a seat on the roof when they are all up there, which is practically everynight.

Beware the intercom....particularly at its loudest on weekend mornings!!Very annoying and unnecassary, only hostel I've ever stayed in with this happening... Everyone knows the checkout time is 10.00am, there is no need for it to be continuosly shouted throughout the hostel from 9.00am-10.00am.

Cleaners are good but be aware of other members of staff just letting themselves into your room...not ideal.
Some members of staff on reception can also be particularly rude. Others not though :)

I stayed in Sydney for my 18th Birthday.. I booked a night at the Funk house backpackers because i was leaving that night & needed a place for my stuff until i left.. I missed my bus & when i went back to the hostel my door had been kicked in and the room raided the hostel manager took 150 from my credit card saying that they had me on camera doing it i know 100% i didnt but they didnt seem to want to show footage.. Later after getting there my partner when into the mens room accross from are room and said there was a boy sitting in there. We thought he was sus so we pretend to leave the room and quietly opened the door up and sat and waited as the boy then came out a couple minutes later after us pretending to leave he looked at us shocked and left the hostel straight away. Im pretty sure it would of been him he would some how have a key. I know i would not have been the only one for this to happen to! So if you are to ever stay at this place id keep all your valubles with you but i would never recomend this place to NO ONE.

We stayed at the Funk House for 5 nights. I arrived first and when paying my rent they tricked me into paying in Sterling, not Dollars giving me a rubbish exchange rate and making money for themselves. My partner arrived later and although he had prearranged the hostel shuttle to collect him from the airport the shuttle company had no record of him when he phoned. The room itself was ok, we had a decent bed, fridge and tv. They try to keep the place clean but it is difficult as a lot of the other guests are quite dirty and don't clean up after themselves so we avoided using the kitchen. They provide a breakfast of bread and cereal which isn't bad. I wouldn't have wanted to stay longer than 5 nights.

Stay here if you are: (a) in your early or mid-twenties, (b) on a budget, (c) appreciative of the finest in trippy graffiti-style wall murals, and (d) want to meet others who are (a)-(c). The Funk House will provide a free ride from the airport (valuable, though you may wait an hour or so for the shuttle, despite promises of them having someone to meet you). As hostels go it's decidedly mid-range, and a bit more "party hostel" than I like. The double rooms are clean and spartan, though the bathrooms are grim. My main problem with this hostel was its decidedly dictatorial character: every surface seemed to be covered with some dictate:
*No visitors.
*Rooms will be cleaned at noon every day, so make the room available for cleaning.
*Any items left on the floor of your room (other than under the bed) are assumed to be trash and may be thrown away.

To make matters worse, the manager's voice frequently pipes up over the intercoms in the hallway, sort of Big Brother meets Lord of the Flies, reminding inmates... erm, guests of their responsibilities. If you're an adult, this can be a bit unsettling, although I suppose it wouldn't feel odd if you'd recently been incarcerated or institutionalized.
