St. James Church is an history of Australia From its early settlement to the present day - the architect was Francis Greenway a convict at that time -the foundation stone was laid in 1819 and in 1824 the Church was consecrated by the Rev. Samuel Marsden Senior Chaplain to the Colony . The first memorial in the Church is to Commodore Sir James Brisbane. A relative of the former Governor Sir Thomas Brisbane - the commodore died at Sydney on the 19th. December 1826 while on his way to the South American station. The Brisbane memorial began a tradition whereby St. James came to house tablets to prominent people including explorers - military personel - doctors - and other public figures up to the present day.
