“Best location in Sydney if you're a tourist!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012

person found this review helpful

The location simply cannot be beat! You are short walk from most of the major Sydney tourist attractions. For example, it is less than a 5 minute walk to:

-Opera House
-Botanical Gardens
-Circular Quay train station and bus station (with a free bus that takes you most other places a tourist would want to go)
-Circular Quay shops and restaurants
-Ferry docks (for ferries to Manly, etc.)
-The Rocks -- a district with excellent shops and restaurants

And it is about a 10 minute walk to the Harbour Bridge if you want to walk across it to take pictures, go to the museum about the bridge, or climb to the top of the bridge (which I highly recommend).

The bottom line is this: The Sir Stamford is in the best possible location for a tourist in Sydney!

In addition, the hotel staff is extremely friendly, helpful, and accommodating. We arrived at 9 AM, and they let us use the facilities to shower and change (from our long flight from Los Angeles) before our room was ready. The concierge desk was also very helpful.

The hotel itself is SLIGHTLY worn. It was all in good condition, but it seemed lightly used. This did not detract from our stay at all, as it was clearly well maintained.

Our biggest complaint was with the in-room internet. They purport to have wired and wireless access (for a fee) in the room. I am a techie so I can almost always figure out hotel internet issues. Though my computer was technically connected to the internet, it operated at a snail's pace (for example, it took about 15 minutes for Google to load). I ended up calling the third-party internet help line, and, after 2 hours on the phone, the problem was NOT resolved. As I mentioned, I am a techie, so I simply could not believe that this problem could not be resolved. In any case, if you go to the lobby, there is free wifi and there are free internet terminals.

Alternatively, walk across the street to the McDonalds at Circular Quay or go to the Circular Quay train station for free wifi.

Dear Valued Guests

We very much appreciate your review as it is so thorough.

Thank you for pointing out the "refresh" facilitiy we offer to international arrivals - however we do urge travellers to consider pre-registering and paying for a room the night before if they have a very early flight into Sydney - it's an extra of course but if you have had 24/36 hours of non stop sleepless travel then knowing your room is ready first thing in the morning is a huge relief. We do try to accomodate early arrival guests but at this time of the year - high season we simply are fully booked.

Our internet is free in the lobby and business centre and we do apologise for the broadband speed that you experienced during your stay when using the in room account.

Once again thank you for your endorsement.

“Great Little Hotel with First Class Service!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

I stayed at the Sir Stamford for two nights in October 2011 and it was a first rate experience. The hotel has an old world charm to it with lovely little nooks to sit and soak up the atmosphere. The rooms are furnished nicely with very large marble bathrooms and quite large a room overall. I ran a small event here as well which was the purpose of my visit and the meeting space and staff were fantastic. I would not hesitate to book here again. Also do yourself a favour and try the breakfast...amazing!

Dear Valued Meeting Organisor and Guest

We are always very pleased to get feedback from our meeting and conference organisors as this is one of our specialist services. Sir Stamford at Circular Quay has 4 designated meeting rooms and suites plus several gorgeous special lounges, including our pool patio that are all available for small receptions, events meetings and even photo shoots. Our hotel is sometimes used as the back drop for films - as it was this past week (see our FaceBook page)

The Dining Room serves a lovely continental breakfast buffet with small dishes and old fashioned favourites like freshly stewed rhubarb and we have a very simple manual organge juicer that is very popular with our return guests. Cooked itemas are prepared to order and my favourite is the spinach and ricotta omelette.

Thank you for taking the time to post this feedback - business clients are very improtant to our hotel.

PS - February Special in The Dining Room is 2 courses and a glass of wine for just $49 per person

Kind regards

“First class service and location.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

It's all true, people aren't exaggerating. This place is great. First off, location is absolutely superb - 2 minute walk to Circular Quay, 3 minutes from the Opera House. Second, the service was unbelievably friendly for a hotel in a big city. I should particularly point out Kieran the head concierge, who was very welcoming, very helpful and a good crack.

Other things - outdoor pool is lovely, not a big view to be had, but lovely nonetheless. Oh, and try and get a Harbour Bridge view - we did and it never ceased to put a smile on our face.

Great place..

Room Tip: Ask/pay for a harbour bridge view.......

Dear Valued Guest

We do appreciate your endorsement of our beautiful boutique hotel, especially the high praise for our Chief Concierge, Kieran Codd, who manages to be everywhere at once and yet always has a smile (or an umbrella!) for each guest departing and arriving. His knowledge of our city and it's nooks and crannies is such an asset to our guests.

Keiran recently led our front line team to the NSW Art Gallery, on a walk via the Palace Gardens so that they could understand more about the cities offerings - there they experienced the world class Picasso Exhibition which ends late March. This first hand experience is essential to ensuring that our guests get the best from their city visit.

Sydney Harbour Bridge is such an inspiring icon and we do agree that it does make you smile and it does make the hotel easy to locate when walking through the city - a glimpse of the bridge and you you know Sir Stamford at Circular Quay is not too far away.

Kind regards

“Lovely retreat in the heart of Sydney”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2012

We spent three nights at the Sir Stamford on a quick trip to Sydney and loved the hotel. It was smaller than other places we have stayed in Sydney, with a wonderful spacious suite, and very personal service from all staff with whom we dealt. The location was perfect for us too - almost every thing that we had planned to do was in walking distance and obviously the ferries and train are all virtually on the doorstep at Circular Quay for further afield. We ate in The Bar one night, which was quiet and restful (like a Club), and had breakfast in the dining room each day which was also adequate without being earth-shattering as breakfasts go.

Dear Valued Guests

We thank you for your "Retreat" comments about Sir Stamford at Circular Quay. We feel the same about being an oasis from the hustle and bustle of Sydney. The stunning sandstone exterior shields us from elements and the quiet ambience inside the hotel is one of rest and calm, unless we have a guest who chooses to show their talents on our beautiful lobby Steinway.

However The Bar can be quite different :- at times quiet, and at others it buzzes with Sydney siders dressed to impress enjoying our renown High Teas. Friday evenings we have cool Jazz provided by our resident pianist Scott Finnie. Before and after many shows at the Opera House we are filled with bow ties and tuxedos, cool jeans and high heels... as guest enjoy The Bar for it's elegant, service and wide range of cocktaills and wines.

Thank you again for your feedback.

Kind regards

“If you like great location, quiet rooms and charm.......”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2012

This was my second stay at Sir Stamford Circular Quay and both visits have been ideal. At $320 a night, its not a budget hotel by any means, but as soon as you walk down the red carpet to the automatic doors, you feel that you have stepped into luxury, but old fashioned luxury. They have a bit of an English 18th century antique theme and is in a building that dates back to the 1800's.
None of the cardboard walls you get in hotels of the 21st century! We stayed for 4 nights and had neighbours but I slept like a baby every night. The restaurant and bars are good too, nice food. The locations is fantastic though, very close to everything in the CBD and parks right across the road.

Room Tip: 10th floor has great views of The Domain and up the river toward the ocean.

Dear Valued Return Guest

Thank you for taking the time to update other travellers of your experience. Return guests make up a very signifcant segment of our business, and as we come to know them and gather information for their favourite rooms types and preferences. they do become part of our "family".

Sir Stamford is exactly as you have described and suits travellers who seek a smaller hotel, in Circular Quay location, with an historic decor. We are one of a kind and very proud of our special hotel.

Once again thank you and return again soon
