“The historical Grand Hotel Cascade”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 August 2011

The current Rantasipi Valtionhotelli (Imatran Valtionhotelli) was opened in 1903 as the Grand Hotel Cascade. It was the favoured getaway for the nobility from St. Petersburg and the Finnish aristocracy. I heard that also Czar Nicholas II of Russia enjoyed staying here. The hotel is situated next to the Imatra Rapids, which are allowed to run free at set times. The hotel has two different parts: the old Castle Hotel and the new Spa Hotel department opened in 2009. They are connected with a tunnel. The Castle Hotel was opened in 1903 and it was renovated in 2005. There are 54 superior rooms in Art Nouveau style, 4 mini-suites, 3 suites and gorgeous tower suite in the Castle Hotel. There are 49 superior rooms, 31 standard rooms, 3 mini-suites in the Spa Hotel. Rock massages and other therapies are available in the spa which is quite small (200 square meters: swimming pool, two whirlpools or jacuzzis, warm rock beds) but stylish and peaceful. There are also three different saunas (Oriental sauna, Steam sauna, Lavender sauna) for women and Castle sauna (Finnish sauna) for men. Our family stayed in the Spa Hotel and we had very big and modern connecting rooms. Adults loved the spa with swimming pools but kids didn't like it. Imatra Spa (Spa hotel Imatra, Imatran kylpylä) is better for children. The good breakfast is served in Castle Hotel's historical restaurant with the very magical atmosphere. The location is very good in a peaceful park in the city centre of Imatra.

“A great castle to see the rapids”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 August 2011

The original hotel is a great castle, which has added a new annex more modern and anonymous. We, unfortunately, stayed in the second. The room was large and clean. The hotel has a lovely spa with pool, hot tubs and saunas. Breakfast is served in the castle in a beautiful and historic hall. The experience was good and the rapids are very beautiful.

“Wonderful hotel in a beautiful setting”

Stayed here recently on a week-long business trip. My room was in the newer portion of the hotel near the spa. Room was comfortable and spa cafe was a great place to grab a quick salad and glass of wine for those evenings when I wasn't looking for a big dinner. Breakfast was the standard European fare, with a wide variety. I did not eat dinner in the restaurant. Be sure to get out for a walk along the trails by the gorge and lake. It was simply beautiful!

“Peaceful hotel in nature surroundings”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 July 2010

We stayed at this hotel for a weekend. The hotels has 2 buildings: the castle and the the spa building. We had to live at new spa building since the castle was fully booked. I do not regret about that since castle rooms are more expensive and less cozy. Anyhow the breakfast room is located at the castle building, so you may enjoy the imperial Art Nouveau atmosphere during breakfast time.

The castle itself is the main attraction in Imatra. It was build by Russian Tsars in Art Nouveau style for Russian aristocracy tourists and originally had the name of Grand Hotel Cascade d'Imatra. The castle is located by Imatrankoski Rapids. Unfortunately it is not easy to see the water in the rapids because the power company makes water flow in summer only for a very limited time.

Hotel features a free sauna with small swimming pool. The sauna is quite large. The spa building is located almost in the forest with pine-trees touching your room windows. That's very relaxing. We stayed in August and slept with open windows. It was a very healthy and relaxing sleep!

You may rent a bike from a hotel reception and have a great biking in the park close to the hotel. The park offers bike roads and picturesque views. Free internet, free parking. The breakfast was plentiful, nothing to complain. Definitely Imatra is a nice place for a relaxing or sporty weekend.

“Traditional and pricey”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 June 2010

I stayed here for one night in the old building. The building is really nice and full of nice details at least if looked from outside, almost like a small castle. Also the public areas inside create a nice, traditional and decorous atmosphere. The food in the restaurant was delicious. The location is perfect if you want to see the Imatrankoski rapids, which is located just next to the hotel (Note: the power company lets the rapids run free only 15 minutes per day in summer)

But the place was, however, far from perfect. The standard rooms in the old building are quite Spartan, and thus overpriced. The elevator door (the is only one elevator) is creaky. The spa, that is included in the room price, is located in the new building which is connected by a tunnel to the old one. Unfortunately the spa is nor really a spa, just a sauna with a couple of pools.

Anyway, I think this is the best hotel in Imatra, but mostly because of the historical value of the building....
