The current Rantasipi Valtionhotelli (Imatran Valtionhotelli) was opened in 1903 as the Grand Hotel Cascade. It was the favoured getaway for the nobility from St. Petersburg and the Finnish aristocracy. I heard that also Czar Nicholas II of Russia enjoyed staying here. The hotel is situated next to the Imatra Rapids, which are allowed to run free at set times. The hotel has two different parts: the old Castle Hotel and the new Spa Hotel department opened in 2009. They are connected with a tunnel. The Castle Hotel was opened in 1903 and it was renovated in 2005. There are 54 superior rooms in Art Nouveau style, 4 mini-suites, 3 suites and gorgeous tower suite in the Castle Hotel. There are 49 superior rooms, 31 standard rooms, 3 mini-suites in the Spa Hotel. Rock massages and other therapies are available in the spa which is quite small (200 square meters: swimming pool, two whirlpools or jacuzzis, warm rock beds) but stylish and peaceful. There are also three different saunas (Oriental sauna, Steam sauna, Lavender sauna) for women and Castle sauna (Finnish sauna) for men. Our family stayed in the Spa Hotel and we had very big and modern connecting rooms. Adults loved the spa with swimming pools but kids didn't like it. Imatra Spa (Spa hotel Imatra, Imatran kylpylä) is better for children. The good breakfast is served in Castle Hotel's historical restaurant with the very magical atmosphere. The location is very good in a peaceful park in the city centre of Imatra.
