“Disappointing”

We have known about this place and its reputation for over thirty years and finally got there for lunch en route across the Pennines. There is absolutely no doubt that its situation is delightful and the inn is charming. The service was exemplary. Yet, and yet, the food was very disappointing. The presentation was imaginative – veering upon ponsey. But, OH’s steak and ale pie contained undercooked (not al dente, but raw) vegetables and the pastry was burned. My battered haddock was horribly oily – served on a page of ‘Shibden Mill Times’ which gradually incorporated itself into each forkful. What a shame...

Had a very enjoyable overnight stay at this charming country inn. We had a cosy room that was prettily decorated in keeping with the inn and the surroundings. Having eaten here before at lunchtime I expected the food to be good and I wasn't disappointed. The staff were friendly and we found the service very good, There is a lovely warm, welcoming feel to the place. All in all it was a delightful overnight stay.

“Flying visit but charming property”

I stayed here with my fiance on Sat 28.01.12. We were attending a wedding reception in nearby Halifax and needed somewhere to stay. The room was booked on the morning that we stayed and thought it was a nice touch when a member of staff called us within half an hour of making the booking to check whether we wanted a table in the restaurant as there weren't many left. The location is very picturesque and made especially so with a dusting of snow on the hills. We stayed in room 11 in the eaves of the building. The room was very small and the decor on the chintzey side but had nice touches. There was also a strange brown liquid gathering on the toilet lid which we put down to a leak from the extractor fan above. The bed also soomed smaller than a standard double. However, the slightly odd room and layout did add to the charm in a strange sort of way and I would stay there again although would perhaps ask for a different room! The breakfast (included) was excellent and cooked fresh to order. It's just a shame we didn't get to eat in the restaurant as I've heard good things about it. Perhaps on our next visit...

Room Tip: Room 11 was in the eaves and very small. However, it was very light with the electric velux window.

“Delightful hotel and dining experience but disappointingly let down by the management”

Beautifully appointed accommodation with pleasant and enjoyable drinking and dining facilities in a quaint, nicely appointed, relaxed and idyllic setting. Unfortunately totally let down by the staff and management. The entire staff from reception to service were young (in one case looking too young to serve behind a bar), naive, poorly trained and badly managed. Management were arrogant and over-domineering of staff. Probably the former were a result of the latter. From some things I overheard during my stay I can't imagine why anyone would want to work there long term, so presume frequent staff turnover diminishes the long term service quality of the establishment. Having said that the quality of accommodation and dining outweigh these negative issues, which can easily be ignored, at least during short stays.

“Lovely inn, full of character”

This was my second visit to the Shibden Mill and it was enjoyable yet again. The first visit we stayed in a cosy and very prettily decorated room. This time we had a super large room leading on to a small patio - too cold to use in January but very nice to look on to. The staff were very welcoming as well.

The restaurant is full of atmosphere and the breakfast in the morning was terrific. We will be back! Maggie B
