We were on a cycling tour and had planned to stay somewhere else but due to the rain we decided to stop earlier at Killary House instead. The older owner and ex-sheep farmer (as we found out) was genuine and caring enough to take us in and he also helped to dry our clothes near the stove in their kitchen and the dryer and we got them back nice and dry in the morning. The rooms are not fancy or big but they are clean and it worked for us. Everything needed was there and we all loved the old Irish style and the location. After showering we walked to the pub in the village (5 min walk) and mingled with the locals and swapped stories with other tourists. That was a fun, late night! Breakfast was served by a younger girl, in a formal dining room and that was good too. We are from the US and wanted to experience the 'real thing' and we felt that we found it here. These people are real and friendly but might not walk around with a permanent fake smile and platitudes. I was able to talk to the old man about the area and his farm, etc. and his humor was refreshing. This place is right on the water with mountains behind it- beautiful. If you are looking for fancy or perfect this might not be the place for you but we feel that it's the original Ireland you want to get a feel for you found a good place to spend the night.
