Stayed here with my entire family, plus cousins, covering 9 rooms in total.
The rooms were very big and clean. The view of the river through the room was lovely.

Service was very good, and I will definately be going back.

Can only concur with most previous reviewers: The Maltings, more guesthouse or small hotel than classic B&B, offers good accommodation at a very reasonable price in a historical building in a quiet setting alongside a small river; the reception is friendly, rooms are spacious and clean, and the breakfasts ample. The castle grounds (chief sight) as well as the various pubs and restaurants in this attractive small town are all just a short walk away. Birr, a classic planned town, may seem more English than Irish in appearance, but it has lots of character and the castle grounds make for a pleasant stroll - I delayed my departure the next morning to spend more time there.

I just spent four nights at The Maltings. It's in a historic building on the Camcor River, in the town of Birr, right next to Birr Castle. You can walk to restaurants, the town, the Castle gardens--all a few steps away.

Birr itself is in the heart of Ireland and a great base for day trips to many sites. The people are amazingly friendly and helpful and that is totally true of Maeve, the pleasant and energetic owner/manager of The Maltings. She is a big part of why this is such a great place to stay.

My room overlooked the river--I love a water view. The room was a good size, simple in decor. Very comfortable mattress. Flat-screen TV. There is a computer available for guest use but I didn't use it.

Breakfast was wonderful--every kind of choice, hot and cold, and fresh-cooked to order. Delicious coffee too. And I could sit and look out at the river, the ducks--even a fish jumping here and there. In good weather, there is a deck where you can eat as well.

I would definitely stay here again and highly recommend The Maltings to anyone exploring this fascinating part of Ireland.

I've been coming here for years. It's quiet, clean and comfortable. Maeve is great and will help you with whatever you need. Breakfast by the stream is a terrific way to get the day started. Walk everywhere (except you'll need a car to get to Birr Golf Course or the Thatch.) The Maltings is a special unique place with atmosphere. A great night's sleep. And incredibly reasonable. Looking forward to returning soon.
