While, I've probably stayed in better hotels with more facilities. This place was almost perfect for this particular trip. It far exceeded our expectations of a 3 star. It was amazingly quiet there given that Ireland is full of average, overpriced, noisy, dirty and badly run hotels with smelly carveries. It is none of those. Water's Edge is well-priced, calm, spotlessly clean and appears to be well run. Places like this deserve to be busier.
Water's Edge is in a really wonderful location - it's literally on the water's edge- with terrific views up and down the lough, its also a very very relaxed place.. but it was a good bit quieter than I expected. Perhaps that is because Water's Edge has got no facilities really and only about 8-10 rooms, however it is close enough to some really great, safe and (almost empty) sandy beaches.
We stayed in a suite - it was a comfortable and spacious room, spotless, lovely bathroom, large and comfortable bed. It was possibly a better room than in most 4 and even 5 star hotels I've stayed in over the years. The views, on waking up on a sunny morning, were better than I've ever experienced anywhere in any hotel.
The staff were very friendly and obviously work hard to maintain high standards of service and cleanliness.
The restaurant is the main element there - it's a most impressive light filled space - glass and wooden beams, vaulted ceilings, with stunning views of and across Lough Swilly. It was fairly busy on each evening we ate there. Apparently people travel quite a way to dine there, which must say something. Their menu is wide, with a range of fish dishes, steak, pork, chicken etc. It may not quite be Michelin star quality, but for me it was delicious, varied, interesting, and especially well cooked and presented. If Water's Edge was closer to a city, it would be permanently booked out. If I'm ever thereabouts again, I'll be going back.
