“Not Good - need better staff.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 November 2010

Fort Royal is a lovely old house sitting on the edge of the pretty village of Rathmullan. I visited Fort Royal many years ago and enjoyed my stay so me and my wife decided to return but we were left very disappointed. I feel that it is now living off past glories as the hotel and staff are not as warm or friendly as I once recalled. The house is ok, a little tired in places and I feel that for the prices charged I would be expecting better rooms and better service. Five star prices for little more than a B&B!
The chef, who also seems to be the Manager, is gruff to say the least with little or no interest in those he is catering too. The other staff seem rather snooty and on our departure we were left standing in reception for 15 minutes with staff milling passed us, not one asked if we could be helped in any way.
We will not be back.

As the manager of a small hotel I know virtually every guests name and when they stayed. I am totally convinced that this reviewer did not stay with us at all. I am assuming that they are related to a previous false reviewer from 28th Aug 2010 who described our hotel with a very similar review. Quite why they want to 'bad mouth' us is beyond me. I challenge either of these reviewers to prove to me they actually stayed with us and I will gladly apologise and remove this response.

“Outstanding Location, Great service and amazing food... yum yum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 November 2010

Visited the hotel in June without any research, just highly recommended by a friend. The Hotel is set in its own grounds which includes a small golf course (pitch and putt). The gardens are well looked after and enjoyable and on doing this I discovered one of it's best features in as much that it is right next to a beautiful sandy beach and shallow sea which goes on for miles. My Children loved being able to walk five minutes to the beach which was very clean to play on. In addition you can walk along the beach for twenty minutes which brings you to a small habour which has to great Irish pubs. The staff really go out of their way to make you feel at home. I spent some time exploring the grounds and came across an amazing enclosed vegtable garden which had a large varity of different vegtables which I learnt supply the hotel. One of it's best features is the outstandng food, a good menu which uses local produce and it shows, quality meats and fishes which I have not tasted for a long time indeed. The breakfastes are just as good, I really hates hotel bacon which I feel is always cheap and nasty but oh no it's proper quality back bacon cooked to perfection and runny eggs oh at last a proper hotel that knows how to serve a great breakfast. Stay here and you won't be disapointed.

“Brilliant for weekend break”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 September 2010

Just back from a great weekend in Rathmullan Co. Donegal. We stayed at the Fort Royal Hotel and were really inpressed by service, friendliness, food and cleanliness of the hotel. We stayed for 2 nights and got a great family room overlooking the kitchen garden. The staff were brilliant with our children and made us feel really welcome. The location of the hotel is very good and there are lots of things for young ones to do, there is a very good beach a stones throw from the hotel.
We were so impressed by the place that we have agreed to come back next year.

“The Fort Royal is Wonderful!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 September 2010

Our family have been going to the Fort Royal for three generations, in fact, my Mother-in-law (now aged 84) was with Tim's grandfather when he first decided to buy the place and turn it into a hotel!
It has so many special memories to us and our children. Our daughters are now aged 21 and 17 and, a few years ago, when flying back from Forida having all had a super time, we asked them if Florida was their best holdiay to which they replied, 'No. we like The Fort Royal more!'
You cannot guarantee the weather at The Fort Royal, but you accept this and, if necessary, put on your waterproofs!!! You will still have an amazing time. In fact our daughter wrote about it for her GCSE English!
We tend to stay in the self catering cottages and have a few meals in the hotel which are absolutely gorgeous. We are about to book for next year and seriously recommend that you book here (but hopefully not when we are going in case there is no room for us!)

“Fort Royal, an excellent small hotel.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 September 2010

We have just had the most enjoyable four night stay at Fort Royal, where everything was perfect. Tim and his very friendly staff took great care to ensure that we had the most relaxing stay, which together with our sea-view room, our wonderfully prepared meals and the hotel's idyllic location, it just couldn't have been better. It is not often that you feel that you can give a perfect 10, but on this occasion it is well deserved.
