“The four of us”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 November 2011

Two of our party had stayed at this location 14 years before and enjoyed the hospitality offered so much that we returned with two friends. We stayed for three nights in the converted cells and had a ball. Peig was a bundle of information and a very welcoming hostess with tea or coffee and biscuits offered on arrival. The location of the castle is ideal for access to Cahir and surrounding tourist attractions. The beds were very comfortable and the accommodation very clean. Breakfast was great with plenty of choice. The accommodation has an interesting history worth reading about. We four would stay there again without hesitation. WONDERFUL!!!!!

“Wonderful Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 November 2011

My daughter and I had a wonderful experience staying at the Carrigeen Castle. When I called David to tell him we would be a bit later than expected, he said that was no problem. When we arrived we were greeted by Peg and shown our room. It was spacious and very clean. We visited with Peg about the hi-lights in town and she gave us info about where we could eat in town (lots of choices). The breakfast was great, almost too much food. We left shortly after breakfast (*and paying of course) and Peg wished us well. We had read some not so complimentary comments about the Peg/David and they couldn't have been more wrong. They were both very nice and hospitable (and funny). Great location to town. Well worth it!!

Room Tip: We had a double room with a bathroom in the room. Definitely worth it to have our own bathroom.

“Not worth It!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 October 2011

Not worth it! The outside of the building is cool and looks like a castle. It was actually the prison associated with the main castle. Inside it is very much a normal building- nothing that says “castle”. The beds are perfectly comfortable and the breakfast is good. It was clean. But the owner was really unpleasant. We got in an hour later than we’d said because we got terribly lost- the directions were very incomplete. She met us at the door and bawled us out, telling us there would be no dinner, we had no one to blame but ourselves and how dare we keep her up late. The lecture continued about 15 minutes as she showed us to our rooms. The smell of alcohol was thick on her breath. I was dumbfounded that she would speak so disrespectfully to a customer or even another human being.

The next morning at breakfast, when I tried to sit at the table with my friends, she actually grabbed my arm to move me to the table she had pre-selected for me. Most bed and breakfasts give guests a window of 2-3 hours for breakfast, but at Carrigeen Castle, the owner picks the time. The experience of how we were treated ruined the more pleasant aspects of the experience. One member of our party was so upset, she was thinking about sleeping in the car. Everywhere else I’ve traveled in Ireland, I was met with great kindness and friendliness, so this experience was a huge contrast. The town of Cahir is well worth visiting and utterly delightful, I’d just recommend staying elsewhere.

“If you want to stay in a castle.........”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 October 2011

this is the one to book. Within walking distance of town & sits on a hill with an awesome approach up the driveway. Really, it's a true medieval castle in excellent condition. Peg Butler the owner greeted us, was very informative & delightful. She runs a very tight "ship" & it shows. The rooms are immaculate & well appointed. There's only liquid soap in the bathroom we had,as in most of Ireland b&b's, so bring your own toiletries.
The only complaint was that there is not rolled toilet paper in the bathroom, but small sheets of paper in a dispenser. So if you anticipate any digestive problems, bring your own roll:-) There is no wi-fi due to the thick stone castle walls.
The breakfast was superb & you order it the night before. Unfortunately,we stayed only one night.
Three cheers for Carrigeen Castle!

“a castle B&B”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 October 2011

The Carrigeen Castle is unique for a B&B with the look of a castle outside and inside. Our room was comfortable and clean though sparsely decorated. The bathroom is modern. The remainder of the castle is nicely decorated. The breakfast is served in a large room and the tables are beautifully set. The protein laden breakfast included two eggs, four slices of bacon and two sausages with toast, juice, coffee or tea. We chatted with Peig when we arrived and that set the tone for an interesting visit in Cahir.

Room Tip: There is a spiral staircase to negotiate for the older rooms.

Thank you, indeed, for taking the time to write such a nice, succinct, review of our home. We are glad that the prison castle feel was experienced, and particularly appreciate your 5star location and service reviews, and your 4star rooms, cleanliness and value feedback.

The detailed recall concerning the layout, content and presentation of breakfast, the time spent conversing and appreciating the history of the building is obvious, and we are grateful for your time spent with us.
