Not worth it! The outside of the building is cool and looks like a castle. It was actually the prison associated with the main castle. Inside it is very much a normal building- nothing that says “castle”. The beds are perfectly comfortable and the breakfast is good. It was clean. But the owner was really unpleasant. We got in an hour later than we’d said because we got terribly lost- the directions were very incomplete. She met us at the door and bawled us out, telling us there would be no dinner, we had no one to blame but ourselves and how dare we keep her up late. The lecture continued about 15 minutes as she showed us to our rooms. The smell of alcohol was thick on her breath. I was dumbfounded that she would speak so disrespectfully to a customer or even another human being.
The next morning at breakfast, when I tried to sit at the table with my friends, she actually grabbed my arm to move me to the table she had pre-selected for me. Most bed and breakfasts give guests a window of 2-3 hours for breakfast, but at Carrigeen Castle, the owner picks the time. The experience of how we were treated ruined the more pleasant aspects of the experience. One member of our party was so upset, she was thinking about sleeping in the car. Everywhere else I’ve traveled in Ireland, I was met with great kindness and friendliness, so this experience was a huge contrast. The town of Cahir is well worth visiting and utterly delightful, I’d just recommend staying elsewhere.
