“Very enjoyable weekend”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2012

We also stayed in this hotel the same weekend as Mich666 and although slightly worried by previous reviews, I have to say, my feelings were totally the opposite. This Hotel has only very recently been taken over and I took the time to talk to the new owner about his ideas -very interesting. I found the staff exceptionally pleasant and helpful. We went to the bar for a drink and afternoon tea, with the intention of going to Cahir but never made it as the craic in the bar with other weekenders enticed us to stay. We had to leave the craic for dinner and I have to admit, it was one of the nicest 4 courses I have had in a hotel. Our bedroom was big and bright and yes, slightly old fashioned but that is one of the matters the new owner did mention he wished to address. The only negative point I have to make, is, that the room was slightly cold on our arrival at 2.30 but all it needed was a request to Mary, the receptionist, and the room was indeed comfortably warm on our return to it. The area/scenery is beautiful and just begging for you to go out and explore, even if it was a crisp fresh morning. We would love to go back again in spring/summer. Margel, Dublin

Room Tip: Corner Rooms are large and sunny with a wonderful view

“not child friendly!! not family friendly!!”

i was dreading my weekend here, after reading the other reviews...first of all,its very difficult to find, its not in the village of cahir at all(apart from the castle, nothing else there..) its half way to mitchellstown.after twice asking for directions,we eventually found it.the reception room was cold and i was told that i would be charged 20euro each night 4 my 6 year old son(myself and my husband were on the groupon deal).this was a tad expensive..ive been in great places(this definatley NOT one of them),that charge that much before..our room itself was ok,very old fashioned, tint tv with no remote,at full volume, with no way to turn down..but the radiators came on when we entered so wasnt too cold.the sink in the bathroom had a green stain around it..yuk! we went into the bar to eat, service was very slow.we ordered 2 chowders that were supposed to be served with"fresh soda bread",nope 2 hard white rolls..the small fire was the only source of heat in there.i said i was cold but was informed that the radiators at the back of the room"had not worked in years"!!..i retired to bed early.the radiators in the room, great to be warm but..they were on all night so i was too hot and thus slept badly.there was quiet from elsewhere though so that was good.breakfasdidnt start till 9am,now as an adult this may be fine, but from 8am i had a very hungry 6 year old...breakfast itself was nice, and the staff in there were too.sunday night we went to eat in the bar at 8pm..the menu is very bare and has no childrens menu at all.it does say you can ask,i did, requested spaghetti for my son,nope..as we were sat waiting for the food,3 men were also in the bar, they were obviously very drunk and were swearing badly.i spoke to the barman, who spoke to them..no difference..i spoke to them myself..they stll carried on.we went out to sit in the reception area..i could(and of course my chlid) could still here them.i complained to reception only to have them tell me that these men "had been coming here 10 years",and that they "had been in the bar since 1pm"!!! unbelievable,no wonder the place gets such bad reviews!!! they would rather carry on serving these drunk men than cater to familes.we ended up having to take the food up to our room.i know we didnt pay much on the groupon deal..but have they not heard of the phrase"children are the future customers" obviously not and my family will NEVER be back here.

Room Tip: are there any? i think not!

had a very relaxing weekend in this very old fashioned hotel the staff were warm and welcoming and although tired and in need of refreshing the rooms were clean and of good size. no mod cons here so perfect for a quiet get away. if you want 5* then don't book here but if you want peace and friendly service with excellent food this is the place.

“Very Run Down Hotel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012

We got a Groupon deal for this Hotel and after reading other reviews we weren't expecting much. This hotel needs a complete refurbishment. On check in were were pointed in the direction of our room, once we entered the hallway we could immediately feel a draft and a strong musty smell. The room had a Double and single bed so the door did not open fully. Again the room smelt of mould, it was however reasonably clean. As another poster has said the single glazed windows mean that a lot of heat is lost and also the window was completely covered in condensation. We had a drink in the bar which is quite run down also but the open fire provided us with some warmth at least!!! We awoke the following morning to find the heat was off!!!, Both of us were extremely cold. On arrival in the breakfast room we were not greeted at all by he serving staff who seemed to be rushed off their feet despite the low number of people eating.. The breakfast buffed was pretty much non existent with a couple of cereals and some juice to choose from. The cutlery on our table was also dirty. We decided there and then to check out and not use the second night of our voucher. This hotel is not comfortable at all. It is a shame as there are magnificent views form there but the place needs serious investment which the owners obviously don't have funds for.

Room Tip: If you must stay here choose a room in the 'newer part'

“Never Again”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2012

Having bought a voucher for a two night B&B stay with afternoon tea at a very reasonable rate we ventured to Kilcoran Lodge fully equiped with the not so great reviews below and also some equally bad reviews from friends who had been...... We were expecting "shabby".....

On arrival it was dark and the outside was all lit up with Chritsmas lights and had a romantic feel to it......

Entering the lobby you are greated with oversized green leather couches, mirrored pillars and big patterened carpets (clashing in some places) - you have to look twice to find the reception desk hidden down the back of the room.......

So far all as you would expect from an old style hotel that has most likely not changed a bit since its inital opening many moons ago........

Check in was rushed and not overly welcoming - but we were late and it felt like the receptionist had been waiting on us to arrive so she could leave.......

We had a quick look about our room and headed back to the bar to grab some food before they stoped serving. Although we were sat right on top of an open fire I kept my jacket on through out the whole meal it was that cold (It was actually quite mild outside) The food was grand - nothing more than that though and we knew we wouldn't eat there the next night. (The bar man was very friendly)

After a few drinks we headed decided to call it a night, It was a challenege to track down the bar man to pay our bill as he seemed to have more than one job to be doing.

We headed back to our room,It was TINY and not quiet so clean!!!
The room could deseraptly do with a good paint and new carpets - but it would do.....
I decided to have a bath - this is when I noticed the bathroom window....... a normal unfrosted window with a poor attempt to frost it by covering 80% of one of the panes with a blurry sticker. (The room is over looked by some cottages – unless you like an audience, its not quiet what you want in a bathroom)
On filling the bath I noticed a strong smell of bleach and that the water was blue in colour......There was SO much residue of blech on the bathtub, the tiles and the taps it was unbelievable – sitting in this water could not be good for your skin.....on further inspection, dispite the abundance of cleaning chemicals there were hairs and dirt everywhere........... The bath was not going to happen!!!
Climing into bed the sheets, although crisp and comfy feeling, looked less than clean – I went to bed thinking of checking out the next morning rather than staying the 2nd night!

The next morning we woke slightly more positive, untill we tried to have a shower that was, firstly it was near impossible to turn the shower on and then when it was finally going the water was SO hot it would scald the skin off you.........god forbid a child or an elderly person were to get into the shower there – they would most definatly have to be hospitalised. There was NO cold water in the shower (mixer tap) at all – (I believe this is actually against health and safety regulations!)

We went straight to reception and asked to be moved to an alternative room but more importantly that the shower be fixed as it was a danger............The receptionst (same lady as the previous night) was lovely and very apologetic and there was no question about moving us. We were moved to a larger/cleaner room and at first we were happy. That was untill we arrived back at the hotel that night to go to bed!!!!

It was BALTIC........ that night I wore, a tracksuit, two tshirts and a pair of socks to bed and I was still frozen to the bone.......

After finally falling asleep with great difficultly we were awoken at 8am with the start of breakfast, they may as well have been serving it in our room, we could hear ever word the diners said as well as the music being played............so we decedided to get up.

Again we had the same issue with the shower!!! (we had had showers before going out the previous night and they were fine, bar the poor excuse for a towel we were provided with)

So we went for breakfast – there was no fresh bread like there had been the previous morning, no bowls for cereal and the fry was swimming around the plate in grease (more than you would expect from a fry!!)

The website and its pictures are so deceptive, more so than any other hotel we have ever stayed in – they also never once mention you have to pay to use the pool – a disgrace as a paying guest!!

We would pay NOT to stay here again rather than ever go back - even if it was free!!

The best part of the weekend - leaving!! Thankfully we had got a very cheap deal and so did not feel hughly put out by the whole experiance.
