“I can't see what all the bad reviews are for”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 November 2011

First off can i just say i was very anxious about going to this hotel as the reviews since July have been fairly bad so i wasn't expecting much.

We arrived on friday night and were checked in straight away. The receptionist told us what time the breakfast was served each morning.

The room itself is quite dated but apart from the decor it was very comfortable. The bathroom was grand working shower, bath, sink, and toilet.

On Saturday after Breakfast (full irish or continental non buffet style)We took advantage of the full use of the leisure centre and followed followed that with a trip into Bantry (approx 2-3 minute drive) or 10 - 15 minute walk. we watched the rugby then in the afternoon in the hotel bar. The TV was big enough for the size of the bar i dont know why other posters gave out about the size of the television.

On sunday we had breakfast again and then checked out about 12 midday.

Overall the decor of the rooms and the hotel are old fashioned but for €99 for two people B&B we were delighted with our stay. The staff couldn't have been more helpful to us. People need to realise that this is an old hotel not a modern hotel and in all fairness we have paid twice the price for an awful lot less.

The only downside is that the corridor does feel like you are walking down a prison corridor but this is only because the doors are key locked and are not electronic like most hotels nowadays.

“WONDERFUL STAFF”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 November 2011

I've read some poor reviews of this hotel but as long as you dont expect a five star hotel, you will enjoy staying at this hotel. We didnt expect plush decor but the entrance lobby is really lovely and comfortable to have a drink or read a paper. We were a party of two couples on a two night weekend break. Every single one of the staff were wonderful. They were the friendliest, most helpful staff we've encountered anywhere. The reception staff greeted us warmly every time we passed by and asked if they could help or if everything was ok for us, and it was genuine. The breakfast waiting staff was to 5 star standard. The breakfast itself was freshly cooked and very tasty as they use local Clonakilty sausage and puddings, along with local eggs and bacon. We had as much of the buffet and toast as we wanted and nothing was too much trouble for the staff. The room was spacious and clean, with tea and coffee facilities and scones, butter & jam laid out for us - a really nice touch. We slept more soundly than we ever have away, as the bedrooms are situated from the main reception area - well ours were anyway. We didnt eat dinner in the hotel but the menu looked nice and was varied. Having stayed in the middle of the town before, we were glad the Westlodge was outside the town by a mile as it is quieter. There are local taxis which only cost us five euro for all four of us to get to the town. Of course it would be walkable on a fine evening. If not eating in the hotel, the Brick Oven, Snug and O Connors are all superb, as is all the food served in Ireland but particularly West Cork - renowned for fresh, tasty, safe and innovative food. You will find Bantry people friendly and they will greet you as they pass. The lady in the post office, Xmas shop, staff in Supervalu, Quills, Paddy Power and the eateries were all friendly and nice to us.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room away from function room area. If you like to go swimming each day, room 321 wa...

“Not great, dissapointed with food, rooms, prices. Staff pleasant.”

Satyed for two nights over a weekend. The food was very expensive and poor in quality - stale bread served with our meal ! One TV for the whole hotel to watch a match. Really surprised in this day and age. Smell of decay and damp prevalent through out the hotel. Overall, staff very pleasant, but hotel infrastructure lets them down.
