“a perfectly good enough place to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 April 2010

Ok so it's a pretty basic sort of place and not at all luxurious but Dempsey's Hostel met all our needs adequately. We had a family room for 2 adults and 2 kids. It had it's own washbasin, the beds were fine and the bed linen decent enough. The nearby shower room was clean and functional. The kitchen was fairly grotty and could do with some money spending on it but fine for sorting out toast and cereal for breakfast. It could be 100% improved if the waste/recyling bins were to be emptied daily. The owner called at the hostel every day to make sure we had everything we needed which is more than you can say for most hotels

“Drop all of your expectations and take bleach. Bedding is clean though”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 March 2010

It was the smell of curied cauliflower soup left in unwashed pots that permeated the whole of this formerly beautiful Georgian house which had us all gagging and the children convinced that there was a dead body buried under the floor boards.
Luckily it is handily juxtaposed with the Texaco garage "Hello there" it says on the sign. All very laid back, very casual and very Irish.
Listen, for 15 euros per night per person, it was literally as cheap as fish and chips. Kinsale is more expensive than Nice.
Pack your bed socks, an air freshener, ear plugs, don't leave your belongings in the room. And oh, no hot water, so make sure your put plenty deoderant in your bag.
There is a telly, 6 gas rings, no oven a go slow toaster and lots of videos.
Beds and bedding clean though.

What this person fails to say, they were with a LARGE group and had exclusive use of the entire hostel, any unwashed pots or bad smells was due to their group! as for noise, as i said they were only ones staying, the group was obviously not being considerate of all it's members, i recall replacing tea towels and emptying refuse bins while this gathering stayed and i was always onhand to assist in anything they needed, so if they were not happy they only had to say so, but again i insist tht ANY noise, cleanliness problems (apart from bin and towels which I accept responsibility for) unwashed pots is completely down to the group as a whole!

I feel this review is unjustified, i recall having to eject a guest who didn't pay who was invited in by one of the younger members of the group, so i was really kept on my toes, the level of noise by them was also unacceptable, but i am here to manage and if a group books our hostel then that group is reposible, this talk of curried cauliflour? let m tell you i NEVER eat curry, i don't like spicey food, the local chinese restaurants are were my foodcame from while they stayed!

I also have to say if my child was uncomfortable and i suspected a corpse under the floor, i would stay elsewhere, i would immediately ask for a refund and leave, if our guests have a problem we only need to be informed, we are not clairvoyant, i was very upset when i read this review, i bent over backwards to help,

Eg. i was asked to give the guests cleane tea towels, i brought them
i was asked to empty bins, i did straight away

I was NEVER told about smell, again THEY were only guests staying, unwashed pots?? seriously again only guests staying, only ever made tea for myself, rest of the time THEY had EXCLUSIVE use of whole hostel!

Noise we are located on a busy road and 5 mins from town so nothing i can do about that noise, but when you are part of a big group and those individuals are drinking and shouting and sneaking people in and being troublesome outside your own front door...then you can't expect peace and quiet!

I politely suggest that next time in Kinsale, perhaps stay in one of the many hotels located in town, perhaps travelling with a big group is also not recommended either!

By the way BLEECH is very dngerous to use anywhere but down the toilets, we use environmently friendly products for cleaning, and hostel IS clean, if we weren't we wouldn't operate!

As for belongings in the rooms, every door has it's own seperate key and again when it's only one group staying in hostel, you have to either trust each other or not..again not my responsibility...i will accept dorms had no locks, but now they have combination locks!

“good enough”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2009

better than I expected, after reading the negative reviews. adequate security with front door locked at night with access code, Kinsale is a small quiet town anyway. hostel is a former 2-story house. TV lounge and kitchen were good, but the whole place is unheated in winter, being only 10-15 degF warmer than outside temp. little chilly watching TV, but beds have thick enough comforters. apparently the young live-in manager fella is new in the past year and does make an effort to keep it clean, if quite reserved and not talkative(huge Barry Manilow fan). 15e dorm is a tad much given there's no extras like either b'fast or internet as you might find in other places. shower water heated by wall units, better than some hostels in Ireland, but still has the same lame and useless 2-tap sinks like Ireland insists on using.

  • Liked — convenient location, quiet
  • Disliked — chilly, no extras

“If you just need a cheap place to sleep this is fine”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 July 2007

I can see why people might complain about this place. It's certainly a bit run down and the owner was not that friendly when i phoned him on arrival.

However I thought it was clean - albeit quite shabby - and very friendly (the other guests and the day time staff were very nice). I was literally looking for a place to lay my head at night and couldn't have done better than the E15 charge for a dorm bed.

Although I didn't spend much time in the common areas - it looked like quite a fun place to hang out - there was a ping pong table in the conservatory.

I would reccommend it if you are looking for a basic budget place and nothing more. Don't forget to bring a towel with you as they aren't provided and get up early if you want a shower!

If the owner installed locks on the doors and was a bit more friendly to customers over the phone, the place would be greatly improved.

  • Liked — The price
  • Disliked — The rude owner

“DIRTY UNSAFE DISGUSTING KIP”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 July 2007

Do not stay here. Avoid at all costs. No receptionist, door wide open all day, signs everywhere to watch your valuables, no locks on doors, no locker facilities. One toilet and shower room between about 6 rooms on the first floor incuding dorms. Aggressive owner. Filthy kitchen. Tourist office said they had received so many complaints about it. If you want to have your stuff stolen and feel vulnerable and unsafe, have a fetish for dirty kitchens then this is the place for you!

  • Liked — Seeing it in my rear view mirror as I drove away at speed
  • Disliked — That it was not built on a fault in the earths crust

Ok OK! i took over as manager in June 2008, so this is before my stint, let me assure you that EVERYTHING has been rectified, their is always a receptionist now, i personally am on hand to welcome guests, check them in and assist them in any way i can, ALL doors have locks and dorms have combination codes, door IS open if it's warm, but their is very nice gentleman working in the garage next door who can watch the place, and i am never very far away, also the tool hire across the road has people to keep watch! Kitchen is now well equipped and spotless, as for toilet upstairs, still only one but 2 showers downstairs and 3 toilets!

Sorry your stay was so abysmal, things are very different now!
