“Back again and a pleasure to be here”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 October 2011

We so much enjoy coming back to the Farm Cottages, its home from home, and Gertrude & John make us so welcome, they are a great couple and nothing is too much trouble.
We were held back a bit this time as we got the tail end of America`s hurricane for a couple of days, but we still got out and about to Car Boots and various Farmers Markets.
We did our usual sightseeing, also we went to the Donkey Sanctuary at Lisscarrol which is only a short run out and see all the beautiful Donkeys.
If you love beautiful scenery then you will love the location of the Farm Cottages, you are surrounded by fields and mountains, plus at nightime as there is no sky pollution, the stars are a treat to see.
Just one more thing to add, do not think about going, go there and you will LOVE the place.

This cottage is a very special house. It still retains many of its original "Church" features. The house facilities are excellent and the location is central to many wonderful holiday spots. Our children loved the farm environment and the space that Billy's Cottage provides. Gertrude is a brilliant hostess, we loved meeting and chatting with her. We can highly recommend this cottage to anybody who is considering holidaying in Mallow/Fermoy (Blackwater Valley). We day tripped to Lismore Heritage Town, Killarney Lakes, Ballyhoura Bike trails, Cork City and Cashel. Our return journey to Dublin took just over 2 hours on the motorway. This was the ultimate pleasure to a wonderful holiday.

“We said that we would be back and we went!”

My wife and I have been going back to the Farm Cottages twice a year since May 2008, and will keep going back.
They are very roomy cottages with three double size bedrooms that will sleep 6 people easily.
The gardens are large and well kept, also there is a full size tennis court and swings for the young ones.
The village ( Castletownroache ) is 1.5kl away with good shops and a very good butcher, also the people are helpful and friendly.
Mallow & Fermoy are not far away if you need to go for the supermarkets to do a big shop.
You are also in a good position for going siteseeing as you are based in the middle lower half of Southern Ireland, so days out are on the cards.
The owners of the cottages also run a dairy herd on the farm 1/2kl away, in the spring they have calves that are a joy to see and feed, also chickens.
There is also fishing down on the river just below the farm, if you dont fish its a nice walk.

“We have been regular visitors for 20 years- so it cant be bad can it!!!”

We have been holidaying for 20 years the Farm Cottages, I think only missing 4 years in the 20.
We have had fantastic extended family holidays with ages from 82 down to 1 years.
If you want a relaxing, stress free, typical irish hospitality holiday this is the place.
Great walks, fishing, beaches and great sight seeing all within an easy distance if not on the doorstep.
Gertrude and John are fantastic hosts and nothing is to much trouble.
"Good Crack in the local Spinning Wheel Pub"
Would highly reccomend if your considering visiting.

“Please let me live here”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 May 2011

We stayed in Billy's Cottage which was spacious and nicely decorated, the kitchen contains a plethora of cooking utensils and aids, so you can actually cook when there (I have been to many self catering places where this is not the case). The lounge is cosy and has a real fire, and John and Gertrude kindly provided us with a bucket of coat, it was April in Ireland afterall. The bedrooms were light and airy, a great nights sleep, every night!

However the reality is that you will probably spend most of your time when not out exploring Ballyhoura County, (or the Cork Cost, Ring of Kerry or the Dingle Peninsula), will be in the Dining Room which adjoins the Kitchen, and overlooks the fields and looks across to Rock and Sand cottages. The Garden is a real treat, our dogs loved it, there is a picnic table and formal chairs too on the patioed area at the back of the property.

However what sets the farm cottages apart is the level of care from John and Gertrude, we had fresh made scones, I was even taught how to make them and although Gertrude is too modestto acknowledge this, I really do beleive that in a cook-off, Rachel Allen would lose. John's passion for his farm is really lovely to see and we were visiting when calves were being born, and it was lovely to see the new additions to his herd.

Sorry I digressed, what is great is the situation, at night there is no light pollution and you can see the stars, you are a short hop from the whole of South, the coast, mountains and all accessable for day trips away. Mallow has a great little town centre and Castletownroche, the 'Village' is amazing and has some lovely little pubs, village shops and is well worth a walk around.

I am afraid that my experience of self-catering has been set now, and I fear I will be unable to go anywhere else.....I would love to live in any of the cottages, we were lucky enough to have a peek at Rock and Sand Cottages too (my mother-in-law has stayed at Farm Cottages many times over the years and said that any would be fine and she was right. The Games rooms and in Rock and Sand were great and they both back on to the Tennis Court.......Although from Billy's it is just a few minutes walk along the lane.

Gertrude and John are consumate hosts and the care and attention to the properties is extended to the guests. It was a very welcome break and we even had amazing weather (we only need a fire once in 9 days). The whole holiday was amazing, and it was the Farm Cottages that made it so. None of us have ever felt so comfortable in a holiday let. John and Gertrude made it so. Highly recommend (unless of course it is when we want it!).

Room Tip: Talk to gertrude she knows her properties!
