I stepped into Malahide for a Business meeting on 8th February and had some time to kill beforehand. I called into the Grand Hotel - a nice looking hotel - and plush lobby, surroundings and location. I sat in the Lobby area reading some work material and laptop open in a lounge chair and table - I asked at reception if I could get a coffee - was told to go to the bar myself for it.
I packed up my laptop and reading material in the lobby and moved to the bar. I ordered a coffee. Served with a smile and pleasant staff.
Wi-fi reception was good in the lobby - but poor in the bar.
After the coffee - I went to pay at the bar - and was astounded - to be asked for - not €2, not €2.50, not €2.75, not even a massive €3 for a cup (not mug but cup of coffee). It was more than 3.20, 3.30 or 3.40-.
Yes - the charge for a Cup of Coffee - is €3.50.
The poor staff were apologising about the price of it.
It really is the biggest rip-off for a coffee I have paid in a Bar in Ireland.
I was planning on arranging to meet the business colleague in the Hotel - where we would have had coffee followed by lunch - but at the price charged for coffee -
I made a quick exit - arranign to meet elsewhere in Malahide and will defineately Not be coming back to the hotel again. That price for a coffee - does not say "Welcome" to its guests.
