“Fairly basic but overall a pleasant experience.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

My partner and I stayed at the Blue Boar overnight as a stop off between Yorkshire and Portsmouth and to be honest we used a free voucher for the room but having stayed would certainly have paid the £70 some pound for the room. The room itself was fairly basic but very comfortable, it was clean, had the largest supply of tea, coffee, toiletries etc that I have ever seen in a hotel and the en suite was fine. We were in a room that was directly above the entrance to the pub and expected a bit of noise but there was none.
We ate an evening meal, partner had a meal from the bar menu and I had a couple of starters. The main meal was a little pricey at £11 for basic gammon and chips but the starters at £2.50 each were reasonable. The food was clearly cooked from frozen and certainly not haute cuisine if thats what your expecting, but filled a gap.
By far the best thing about the hotel were the staff. They were friendly, helpful and polite. Oliver and Gemma were wonderful, extremely welcoming and incredibly helpful, and the head chef was also gracious beyond expectation.
We both felt that this was a charming little hotel that we would recommend to friends and would have been happy to pay for if necassary.

“There are some lovely rooms for the price!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 December 2011

We were given a cold older style room at first then asked to move and for the price, it was pretty nice! Honestly the first room was unacceptable even at a basement price, seventies style decor and very cold, but clean. Location is very close to Stratford, I would stay again for a bargain price- as long as we got a newer room! Remember this is a pub though, so you may here people drinking til midnight, as for us, it was quiet in the bar from 11ish so we slept like logs. Breakfast was good quality.

Room Tip: I believe the rooms on the front of the hotel are newer so ask for one of them, if you are unhappy w...

“Rude Staff, noisy, uncomfortable room”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 December 2011

We stayed at this pub last weekend and it was possibly the worst nights sleep I have ever had. The bed was as hard as rock, the walls and paperthin and we heard everything, and I mean everything!! that was going on in the room next door. At breakfast on Sunday morning, they don't seem to know whether they are a hotel or not. They serve you with tea, coffee, but you have to get your own toast, they also serve you with a full English breakfast, although you have to have the whole lot with no choise as to how you want your eggs. When I didn't eat the tomato I was given, I was told off by the man serving breakfast. Not impressed, I am not a child who needs to be told off. Maybe if there was a menu, you would be able to choose what you want and don't want. When we opened the curtains in the morning, the curtain came completely off the rail, the sink was cracked in the bathroom and there was no cover on the light in there, not really very good and potentially a hazzard I would have thought.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front face onto the road, which is closed at the moment, rooms at the back badk onto th...

“This is a Pub”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2011

I sometimes wonder if all of the reviewers have stayed in the same place, as there seems to be such a wide variety of experiences. This is a country pub, with a country restaurant and en-suite B&B. This is not the Ritz or a flash restaurant. We stayed for one night over the last weekend and were more than satisfied. Large bedroom, which was clean, yes bathroom a touch on the small size, one is not living there and I do not know about other people but unless you are obese it was plenty big enough for our needs. Staff were helpful and friendly, locals were very welcoming and the food in the restaurant was good quality pub food at reasonable prices. We over looked the car park so no real noise, don’t forget this is a working pub so you are bound to get some noise. We would recommend it.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms over looking car park

“Hotel is okay but food is AWFUL. DO NOT EAT THERE!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 November 2011

When we first inspected our double room it was absolutely tiny and the window was wide open so it was freezing. The bathroom was also very small and a larger built person would have difficulty maneuvering inside.
We asked to move to another room and we were promptly moved do a much larger room with a lovely stone wall and a bath. The room was quite noisy in the evening, and early morning.
The rooms were reasonably clean but the corridors looked like they hadn't been hoovered in a few months.
We had food in the restaurant and the staff were all very pleasant and helpful. However we were presented with I would class as very low grade pub food for prices that you would usually pay for high quality home-made food.
I ordered the vegetable tagine which I anticipated to be a home-made, heart-warming Winter broth for the price of £12. I am 99.9% sure that I was served Heinz vegetable big soup. It looked, smelt, and tasted exactly like Heinz. It seemed uncanny. It came with a quarter of a baguette and with no margarine or butter in sight. In all fairness I could have asked for I didn't. It also came with a standard side salad.
My partner ordered the chicken escalope and that had been deep fried and served with re-fried chips. This meal was similarly priced.
Very disappointing food. Wish I had listed to other tripadvisor comments and avoided the restaurant at all costs!
