“Excellent Weekend at the Ballard Inn”

Actually our stay was only over night...but it was fabulous all the same. The Fiesta room was lovely and the heat worked really well. The bathroom being at the back of the room, furthest from the heat, was a bit cool, but once the shower got going, it warmed up nicely. The King sized bed was very comfy and sheets were crisp and clean. We found unique pumpkin cookies on our pillow at turn down time.
Dinner in the restaurant was divine! We ordered several appetizers to share, and one entree each. We would have been fine with one shared entree and dessert, but we couldn't agree on the entree. (lamb or duck...tough choice)
The waitress even complimented our idea, that allowed us to taste a variety of the chef's specialties. The DUCK IS AWESOME. Its the chef's signature entree and he does it with perfection. YUM! (Duck is so easy to do Wrong....) I highly recommend this inn and its restaurant! Since our stay was limited, we did not get to enjoy the on site wine tasting, or the early evening snacks in the common room with the fireplace, or the inviting wrap around porch with the lovely . I would like to return for an extended stay.

“Nice”

Wow! A good B&B set in a romantic town.

- Rooms are beautifully furnished, and the atmosphere is great.
- Staff especially the front desk is excellent
- The building is magnificent, as are the rose gardens

Cons:
- expensive
- no hand basin in the bathroom
- kitchen is noisy at night, and this spoils the rooms immediately above
- noise from the lounge until 10pm at night is bothersome
- dinner is OK, but my rib-eye (why such a cheap cut?) was tough and undercooked
- breakfast is good, with each order cooked immediately. However, if there are no items you
want, you are out of luck, as there is minimal cereal or other goodies. The Hadsten House
in Solvang would be a good example of what one would expect. However, this is a small
place, and one should not expect everything.

But these are quibbles and I want to come again.

“Extremely comfortable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 November 2011

Ideally located, most comfortable bed, great evening happy hour in which to meet other guests and compare wineries. Love the rockers on the porch. All in all a totally comfortable stay.

“Comfy, Cozy and Delicious!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 October 2011

My wife and I had a great opportunity to spend 3 nights mid-week at “Ballard Inn”. The Inn is very warm and inviting with roomy public areas and comfortable rooms. Our accommodation was roomy and the bed was very comfortable, but all the rooms have only a wardrobe cabinet instead of a closet, and personally I found the single in-room washstand uncomfortable to use. The staff is warm and friendly and very accommodating. Each evening from 4:30 to 5:30 a selection of 3 wines is served, accompanied by an assortment of cheese, crackers, tasty tidbits and assorted fresh fruit. A nice cooked breakfast with at least 2 “specials” is offered each morning. Pancakes were delicious! The only food negative was that the fruit bowl was prepared too far in advance and it lacked the freshness and the crispness of the fruit served at the previous evening’s wine tasting. This happened all three mornings. The fruit looked like “leftovers” from the night before. Peets coffee and Pellegrino water are available 24/7. The Inn is very quiet on Monday and Tuesday nights when the restaurant is closed, but it can be quite different on the weekends when the wine tasting crowds descend on the area. The restaurant serves dinner Tuesday through Sunday and prices run to the high side. Definitely a “special occasion” restaurant for us! The menu is limited but the dishes are expertly prepared and served. I can personally attest to a small but delicious seared foie gras appetizer and an outstanding rack of lamb. The wine list is filled with interesting selections but also run to the high side in price. The restaurant does accommodate guests with their own wine, and corkage is $15/btl. All-in-all, a great place to stay if you want to avoid the hotel/motel scene in Solvang and enjoy the quiet ambiance of a small inn.

Room Tip: If you are a light sleeper, select a room away from the street which can get early morning traffic.

The rooms are cozy, the staff is amazing, and the food (both breakfast and dinners at the on-site restaurant) is unparalleled.
