The Crown Inn serves pretty good (but not great) pub food at central London prices, despite being in rural Berkshire. We had x4 meals and each seemed about 25% more expensive than other pubs in the area:
Steak and Ale pie with chips - £16 (not much meat in the pie, but was tasty) - pie and chips for £16?? Since when?
Seafood tagliatelle - £15.50 ( Very bland and not much seafood)
Thai beef salad - £10.00 (was yummy)
In all fairness, we did visit on 2 January when the staff were probably exhausted from the Christmas period. The set menu looked interesting and provided better value for money ( venison terrine, pheasant breast and raspberry tart for £15).
But next time, we'll be going somewhere different. There are so many great pubs in the area (Bottle and Glass at Binfield Heath, Lamb at Satwell, Maltsters Arms at Rotherfield Greys, Abbott Cook in Reading, The Lyndhurst in Reading) that do delicious, interesting food and provide good value for money.
