We have stayed at Grindlewald a number of times over the years, (6 times, stayed in various types of accommodation) and have previously loved the environment - the village shops and the mini golf etc. We have noticed in more recent years that the maintenance of the resort in general has declined, however, they have built some new accommodation (Lake View villas etc). The older accommodation is looking in need of updating, and even the newer accommodation is not built/designed to a high standard.
The mini golf area looked somewhat better this year, compared to last. It is a lovely setting for a fun game with the kids. (and we still do this even though ours is now a teenager)
The Lake view Villas (we have now stayed in them twice) are compact - but lacking in a few basics such as no towel rails (when there is definitely space for them) in the bathroom, minimal shelving/storage space in the bathrooms, and no space for luggage/bags (other than the sofa - but then you have minimal space to sit - other than on beds). There are no complimentary inclusions in the bathroom - and considering the 'usual' full asking price for this accommodation - it is definitely overpriced -- we have never paid the full asking price -- preferring to wait for the 'special' prices (sometimes almost only a third of the full asking price) - and would recommend that no one pay the full standard price, as you would definitely think it was expensive for what you get.
The Villas are 'self contained' and therefore, not serviced -- this combined with fairly brief contact at check in and check out (having paid when booked online) -- made it a very impersonal experience -- we were not even asked whether we enjoyed our stay on check out.
The village shops are cute and staff there are friendly. We highly recommend the Chocolate cafe - in particular the pancakes for breakfast!
We have decided that we will probably look at booking elsewhere on our next visit.
