“old fashioned glamour at its best”

We have visited this superb hotel every year for several years and we love it, ok there's no kids club and no beach but the hotel chlosterhof is wonderfully situated right on the banks of the River Rhine and at the bottom of the magical medieval town of Stein-Am-Rhine, the food here is excellent as is the service, we've always had an immaculate clean suite of rooms, huge balcony with views of the river and of the ancient cobbled streets, the shops are varied (a bit expensive) and you can buy everything from haute couture to touristy things, there are terrific local restaurants and a bakery that is out of this world, the scenery and walks are amazing as is the old monastery where monks live in perfect peace their only access to the outside world is a rickety long wooden bridge, the River Rhine is so clean that people regularly (us too) swim in it, restaurants overlook the Rhine and it is so quaint, like stepping back in time. It appears to be crime free here and all the hotel staff (and in local businesses) speak some form of English, a lot of them fluent. Everything is peaceful and relaxed, even our lively toddler loves to watch the birds on the river and sit quietly with an ice-cream in the warm sunshine. Hire a car and explore the area, its close to Schffhausen which is a large ancient town with huge cathedral and fantastic shops, and about an hour from Zurich Airport. We are going again in August 2011 and cant wait.

Room Tip: ask for high floor to avoid tall trees block view

“Mixed bag”

This hotel certainly has a few assets: The location, only separated from the Rhine by a walkway and it’s two minutes walk to the historic center of Stein am Rhein. The rooms are larger than usual and they are equipped with a Nespresso coffee maker. I’ve not tried the indoor pool.

Chlosterhof means monastery yard. Only sounds historic / romantic as Chlosterhof is an ugly concrete building. More like a prison yard as plants and flowers are also missing, both inside and outside the hotel. Only a very few rooms face the Rhine, most overlook streets and parking lots. There is some lateral river view from rooms higher up, then again be careful with the top floor which is under the roof and gets pretty hot in summer - no air conditioning. Rooms are equipped with dark furniture, in particular a massive four-poster bed. My bed was very short and creaking each time I turned around. Lighting was poor around to sofa, no chance for reading. Rooms and bathrooms are partly renovated but still have a 1970-feel. The LCD TV is not great - just 23 inches and poor picture quality.

Breakfast was far from elaborate with no hot items, mostly pre-packed choices and paper napkins – you get the picture. Staff was obviously told to be friendly and attentive. So they tried to smile while waiting for their shift to end.

Despite the nice location, this is just another generic business hotel mainly used for seminars and meetings. For the CHF 250 (single with breakfast) charged, they have to try much harder. Better value alternatives in the area include Krone Gottlieben and Bad Horn (both on the lake) or Karthause Ittingen (for real monastery feeling).

“... nice place to stay ... with fields for improvement ...”

We reserved a normal room, but because of our baby they gave us an upgrade to a huge suite. The service was exellent and the food we had for dinner good. Breakfast might need some improvements.
Te location and the view to the Rhine river is great. It could be cleaner ... and some places need a renovation.

“Nice Hotel in Great Little Town”

Of course you cant judge a hotel on the basis of its complementary umbrellas but if you did the Closterhof would do very well. We needed them most of the time during our two days stay due to the weather but even the rain didnt detract from the charm of this hotel.

It's a fairly dull looking building from the outside but is well located just on the edge of the old part of this fantastically pretty town. It also backs onto the Rhein and our room faced directly on to it. It seems to be used for a lot of conferences and that makes it quite expensive during the week but they have very good packages at weekends that include some fantastic food.

Our saturday night meal was a five course affair and was simply superb! The other thing that sets the hotel out is the friendliness of the staff. Really everybody was all smiles all the time. It made a difference and after a couple fo very relaxing days with great food we left smiling too.

The hotel is expertly staffed with real professionals. The restaurant serves the best food in Switzerland. The rooms, location, parking are the best.
