Our recent stay at the Hotel Hirschen in Rapperswill was a wonderful Swiss experience. It's small size and individually well appointed rooms add to its charm. The location couldn't be better. Across the street from the train station and within walking distance to many restaurants, the ferry terminal, the castle and shops. Being outside of Zurich, it is more reasonably priced but still central enough that travel to other locales is easy. The breakfast included in the price of the rooms was delicious and wonderfully presented with a variety of beverages, meats and cheese with fresh bread and rolls delivered daily. You would never believe that the breakfast room is actually a part of the McDonald's downstairs as the restaurant is not open in the mornings. The staff went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable.It was our second stay and not our last.

Used the hotel as a base when we did Ironman Switzerland. There were 9 of us spear through 5 rooms.

Booking the hotel was easy and they were very accommodating. They gave us big rooms and allowed us to put our bikes in the rooms for safety.

The hotel is fairly small and the staff are really friendly. To get to Ironman we had to leave at 4:30am and the owners put out breakfast for us so we could get something to eat before we left (at no extra charge). Breakfast normally is server in the top of McDonalds (though not McDonald Breakfast) and was very good (cold buffet).

Rooms are large (all the ones we had were) and bathrooms in good condition.

The only complaint I would have is that there is no air conditioning in the rooms. For the first few days at the hotel it was 29c outside and we had to leave the windows open. As the hotel is around the square and near the train station there was a lot of noise and so did not manage to get much sleep over the weekends.

Externally a typical Swiss old town hotel.
First thing that hit me inside is the lift up the core of the staircase that's an eyesore.
Room 44 on the top floor is modern, white and I believe, as per whole hotel, recently refurbished. However all the fixtures and fittings are flimsy and already showing early signs of wear. The room had one small window overlooking opposite buildings, two windows about 3m up and a window at floor level with an internal view into the building. Room is large with a sufficient sized bathroom with shower only. Comfortable seating and two desks. Huge, down filled, pillows that were a joy to sleep on.
Breakfast is a poor show with very limited choice in a room that has suffered a lot of graffiti that the owners try to clear-up with limited success.
Incidentally, McDonald’s is in the same building (own, separate entrance) and doesn’t detract from the hotel. It is useful for us sad, lone travellers arriving late and who don’t enjoy eating out alone.
Overall, good value for money while it lasts and if they keep up the maintenance on the cheap fixtures and fittings – see these reviews in 12 months I guess.

We booked a stay here in conjunction with the Rapperswil Jazz/Blues Festival in July. The location couldn't have been better, as the music stages were just outside our door. We asked for a room on the quiet side of the hotel, and were given a room on the top floor, back side of the hotel. The room was not huge, but it had very high ceilings so it appeared larger than it was. The wood beams and unique angles of the room made it quite unique. A very comfortable stay. Parking was extra, but just a short distance away in a public parking garage. My only complaint wss that the shower was quite small, and even though I am not a huge person it was somewhat diffidult to navigate in it. Breakfast was on the top floor of McDonald's but was varied and plentiful. Rapperwil is quite a charming little city. Of course it was made more special by the presence of some great bands, but even without the festival I think it would be a nice stopping off place. We flew into Zurich and didn't want to stay at an airport hotel; it is only about a 30-40 minute drive from the airport, and with the festival it was a perfect place to arrive to from our U.s. flight. Would highly recommend a stay in this city, especially in conjunction with the jazz/blues festival. We even got to personally meet members of the Subdudes, one of my husband's favorite bands, since the stmosphere is one of a small festival--but with great bands. Amusing, however, that they were handing out earplugs to all festival participants--only in Switzerland!
