Switzerland is expensive. The Big Mac Index says its currency is overvalued by 60%. That’s like paying a 60% “Heidi Tax” on every sandwich or train ticket you buy. That being said, the Trend is a good deal — an amazingly good deal, actually — so long as you’re careful about extras. More on that later.
We rented an apartment with its own kitchen. It was spacious by Swiss standards, with a small balcony. The trees behind the building made it feel quite private. All the furnishings looked and felt new. There was a stove, an oven, but no dishwasher; the management supplied a microwave oven on request. Coin-operated washers and dryers, with a large indoor area to hang clothes, were in the basement (though the machines are difficult to program for those who don’t speak German).
The location is off the beaten path, northwest of Zurich and away from the lake, but that is no doubt what makes it possible to have affordable yet very comfortable lodgings in a city where vacation rentals can be breathtakingly expensive. The train station is 7 minutes away by foot; from there it’s an 18 minute train ride to the main train station in Zurich, which is next to a hub of the city transit system. The Regensdorf trains run every half hour during the day and every hour (or more often) nights and weekends. Thanks to the amazing Swiss railroad system you can be in Basel or Bern or Luzern in under two hours after leaving your apartment; you can be in almost any major town in Switzerland within three or four hours.
By car it’s two minutes to the freeway. The airport is 15 minutes away. It’s a five minute walk to a large grocery store.
Given what everything costs in Switzerland, it must be hard for management to break even on these apartments. That’s where the extras come in. They can add up fast. Don’t touch that “Mini-Bar,” those tempting drinks and sweets that have been thoughtfully placed in your refrigerator and cabinet; for every item you consume, 3 to 5 francs will be added to your bill. (When we visited, Swiss Francs were just short of being equivalent to a dollar.) Maid service carries a sizable extra charge, which may contribute to sticker shock at the end of your stay if you don’t specifically ask to go without it, or ask for it once a week only. And then there’s the restaurant. It offers a wide array of choices in a range of cuisines. But for every item there’s a separate charge, and those can add up to a very costly meal. The teppanyaki grill offers crocodile, zebra, or springbok, but we never did sample any of them. When we did use the restaurant, we chose our orders with careful attention to the price; to the staff’s credit, they were very gracious and friendly despite our miserliness. The breakfast buffet offered an amazing selection of Swiss baked goods, cheeses, meats, and many other delicacies. Being Swiss myself, I engaged in some intensive negotiations on the first day about the price (which was a bit ambiguous), but in the end we got a very satisfactory deal on the daily breakfast buffet. (I’d suggest paying close attention to the figures on the rental contract you receive in advance, and bringing a copy with you.) The dining room staff was welcoming, friendly, and pleasant throughout.
Management initially provided only a minimal amount of kitchen supplies (such as plates, glasses, and silverware). With these it would have been impossible to prepare our own food, forcing us, presumably, to eat in the restaurant. To make matters worse, the microwave oven had a plug that was incompatible with Swiss sockets, requiring a converter plug (which I was able to obtain from the front desk). When I complained I got a generous supply of all the kitchenware we needed.
Wireless internet service had to be purchased online, for about 7 francs a day per computer, from a Swiss provider. Parking was 15 francs a day.
The bottom line is that the apartment was very comfortable, and we found the location quite convenient. The breakfast buffets were superb. But we had to be prepared to negotiate and to watch extra expenditures to stay on budget. Our stay at the Trend was very enjoyable, and we’ve already made plans to stay there again in two years.
