“The best short break ever”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 December 2010

Bernkastel-Kues is a beautiful idyllic town situated on the Mosel river. The Marchenhotel is a lovely half timbered building full of character and charm. The staff are friendly and helpful. The room we had was warm clean and beautifully styled on the theme of Snow White without being over the top. We went for the Christmas Market but got so much more and will be going back again as soon as we can. Lovely!

“Fairy Tale Place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 August 2010

Met all expectations. Friendly and accommodating family-run (tenth generation) historic establishment. Creative cuisine served always fresh. A good breakfast spread. Excellent value for money. Each room is done in a fairy tale style. No elevator. The staff helps with carrying the bags to the upper levels.

We missed the view of the Mosel valley, but having been on Reichenau island and stayed along the Rhine, the old town view from the room was an interesting break.

Saturday evening the town was busy with tourists but the next day and Monday were extremely quiet. Driving to the ruins of the castle and the restaurant just below ('Balcony' of Bernkastel-Kues) offered striking views of the Mosel valley. The drive to Deutsches Eck, Koblenz along the Mosel is worth a trip.

“Fantastic location and great staff....”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 June 2009

This is a really nice place to stay in a great little town. We arrived on motorcycles after coming from the UK and were made extremley welcome - good parking, nice rooms and lots of smiling faces! All the rooms are individually designed and are very spacious and a clean. Don't expect a chain type atmosphere, but more like a family run hotel with no glitches. Excellent quality food and service, great breakfast and a central location (the map suggested to me that it was slightly out of town but it isn't). Loads to do in Bernkastel and you could easily spend three days there without moving on or driving anywhere.
Very pleased to have found this place and will certainly go back again.

Oh, if you're interested in wine (and if you're going to the Moselle then you probably are!), then try the Vinothek just a 5 minute walk across the bridge. Open from 1000hr to 1700hrs, you pay 15eu (plus a small deposit for a glass!) and can sample around 120 German wines - no limit on how long you're in there, you just help yourself to what you want. It can be quite dangerous if you're in the right mood....!

“Best Hotel we ever stayed at”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 February 2009

We have stayed in quite a few hotels over the years but none could compare to the Maerchenhotel Alteste.
My Wife and I stayed for two nights during Valentines weekend.
We received a warm reception and stayed in the Frog Kings abode room. It was a fabulous room, spacious, very clean, warm and cozy with a jacuzzi,
The staff were very helpful throughout our stay and we had dinner in the hotel both nights. The menu is in German but this didn't matter as the staff had no problem translating it for us.
For dinner the first night, we had steak, it was delicious!
We dared not venture out the second night so I had the lamb and Clare had the trout, it was a fabulous meal.

Lovely hotel in a very picturesque village (town?). We stayed in the Mosel Prince suite - fabulous 4 poster bed, mini bar and very friendly staff.
