“Lower end of five star”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 December 2010

Spent Christmas there with family group. Heavy snow, difficult access but arriving on Christmas Eve to this warm and spacious hotel on a mountain top was a romatic occasion (even the Christmas music was live and authentic). Rooms are large, a little old-fashioned perhaps but not disappointing.

That said, unless you go for the expensive set restaurant dinner, there are serious limitations. Bistro (expensive) has restricted hours and room service is very poor - one of our group who arrived late after a trying journey was presented with something frankly inedible (which in fairness was not charged). Breakfast buffet ran up to 11.30 but was uninspired. Koenigswinter has alternatives (e.g. the Jesuitenhof) but we would have needed our own snowplough.

This is really a conference hotel - but in a magnificent setting and with some serious history. Room rates are reasonable and younger folk made good use of pool and sauna.

“Nostalgic, romantic, esoteric”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 September 2010

1st of all we approached it on the wrong side of the river so a ferry was required, which in a car at night simply added to the James Bondesque aura of the place. Amazing windy road upto it too. Superb gardens, rooms are great if not modern like a '2 build luxury apartment'. Spa is great, got food in Koenigswinter itself as good to spread the cash. Great steaks and cakes in the town. We have stayed in many a great spot in Germany, Suisse & France and this effort blended in just so. It does have a tiny bit of the Shining but that is down to the styling rather than the ambience. Excellent value for money, and close enough to the Nordschliefe!! Its location is outstanding and it is good to get out there. Go on, you know you want to,

“Just OK”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 September 2010

Hotel was spookily quiet on the night we stayed - boyfriend described it as 'like something off the shining'. Decor in the room was very tired. Photographs of pool have been taken with a seriously wide-angled lens and isn't big enough for a serious swim. As far as we could tell nobody was eating in the expensive restaurant (which was exceedingly expensive) and the menu in the bistro was pretty simple but again overpriced (30 euros for steak and chips). The view from the outside terrace is amazing but on reflection I would rather have stayed in the town and just come up to the hotel for an aperitif before dinner.

“the best hotel we have ever stayed in 'perfect'”

What an amazing hotel. Set high up on a hilltop overlooking the Rhine and town of Konigswinter. The rooms were extremely clean and very comfortable. We had the best sleep ever. The hotel is so quiet no usual hotel noise at all. We decided to take breakfast in our room. What a delight, the table was brought into our room laden with fruits, pastries, eggs, cooked meats, cheeses, yoghurts, freshly squeezed fruit juice, tea and coffee, all this for 18 euros per person. It was a wonderful start to the day. Walks from the hotel are many and varied, and after a long days walking the spa facilities are just the job. When we used the pool and sauna we were the only couple enjoying the wonderful facilities on offer. All the areas in the hotel are exquisitly decorated and a real feeling of gradeur and space is enjoyed throughout the whole hotel. Finished to a very high standard we would most definately recommend and hopefully visit this hotel again. Perfect

“U have to see it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 June 2009

Ive been here twice for 3 days sleep over. Once in summer and once in winter. And both times its beautiful!! U have spectacular view since the hotel is on top of a mountain. This hotel has the most quiet rooms ive ever been! The rooms are very big, sadly the bathroom is kinda small especially the shower!! There is a pool with sauna and steambath. Which has good openinghours. And a very modern fitnessroom. The breakfast was a blast. It is the best!! U want several ingredients with ure omelet u tell the cook who bakes it right in front of u. U have several different fresh juices, there's champagne. The dinner in the restaurant at night is very chique. Anyway it was super to stay at this hotel. In the little town down at the mountain is a Sealife Center, and a boulevard where u can enter ships to sail on the Rheine or to some other towns. And a walk to the castle of Drakenstein is a challenge.
