“Best Hotel for a visit to Konstanz”

We stayed at the Steigenberger for a couple of days and found it to be a very comfortable clean and first rate hotel. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and the location was absolutely second to none. Situated on (not nearby, or across the road from but actually ON) the edge of the beautiful lake it was delightful looking out onto the lake whilst eating breakfast. Breakfast was a plentiful buffett with a great selection of cold meats, cheese, cereals, breads and hot food such as beans, eggs etc etc. Lovely freshly squeezed juices were available and as much tea or coffee as you wanted. If I was to make a suggestion to the management for improvement, maybe freshly cooking the hot food would be better as after 2 hrs of sitting on a hot plate beans and eggs do become a bit dry (however that maybe a little fussy and there really wasn't anything wrong with the hot food!). Someone mentioned that the hotel was becoming a little tired - well yes maybe that review was accurate but I can assure anyone that of Dec 21st, the hotel was in the process of replacing their carpets as we saw them do this throughout the reception and lobby area and this was probably the only slightly "tired" part we saw - the room we stayed in was certainly not tired or dated - it was very much up to date and spotlessly clean with a marble effect bathroom. We have stayed in many many world class hotels around the world and this compares favourably. I would recommend this hotel and agree that it deserves it's five star rating. The only (and again, maybe I am being too fussy) thing I would say is that the attention to detail that sets other five star hotels apart from this one is a little less - e.g the bath towels are not the lovely big thick egyptian wrap around ones we have experienced elsewhere and the dressing gown and bathroom slippers likewise - not heavy, thick and expensively made. The decorations around the hotel are not opulent and lavish, in fact are quite sparse and minimal - but not sleek and modern - just sparse. BUT that should not in anyway take away from the fact that this hotel is truly up there with the other five star hotels and is a very good hotel worth it's stars. I enjoyed my stay there, would recommend it to anyone - particularly the location as it just over the road from the beautiful old town area - and would definately return again.

“Overpriced, tired, attic room”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 November 2011

Missed our connection in D.C. when our plane was diverted to Pennsylvania for a few hours. Called immediately to cancel our first night at the Steigenberger, and were told they would honor our cancellation; but when we finally arrived, we were told we would be charged for our missed first night after all. We were given a tired room in the attic eaves, with pet-stained carpet overlooking the railroad tracks. The elevator didn't go all the way to our floor and there was no bellman or offer of help with our luggage. Hall and stair carpets were also filthy. When we returned to the desk to request a different room we were told the hotel was fully booked. At 240 euros per night, plus parking, we ended up paying more than $700 US (since we were charged for 2 nights for our 1 night stay) for a small, stuffy, dreary, dirty room with a very small bath. At that rate we thought staff could at least try to accommodate our request for a different room. We were simply told "no" without even a pretense of actually checking availability. It was the worst stay of a 6-week road trip in Germany. There was also no concierge on duty, and desk staff didn't seem very knowledgeable about dinner suggestions or directions. Parking lot was small and cramped and required much maneuvering to fit into a space.

Breakfast was extensive and delicious. However, it was self-service with the exception of drinks. Staffing was minimal and, even though we lingered on the lovely terrace overlooking the water, we were unable to get any beverage service until the end of our meal. The hotel is in an old monastery with a lovely interior courtyard, and was probably quite grand at one time. Not so anymore.

Did not use pool, fitness, etc.

Room Tip: Be sure to request a non-attic room served by the elevator.

“Very nice hotel - Must stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 November 2011

If you arrive to beautiful Constanz town, you must stay overnight in the Steigenberger Inselhotel. Excellent location, on the beach and close to the old town with its many nice shops. The rooms are very nice and include all you need. The breakfast is rich and the whole atmosphere in the hotel is very nice. Note that Internet and parking are not free. Also there no free coffee.

“A wonderful hotel experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 October 2011

We spent four nights at the Hotel Steigenberger in mid September 2011 and had a wonderful experience. We found the hotel to be very clean and it was obvious that furnishings and rooms had recently been refreshed with updates. Our accommodations included breakfast each morning. The array of breakfast selections was one of the best we've had in our many travels through Europe. The setting of the hotel is on a small island within a very short walking distance from the Konstanz city center, restaurants, ferry to Meersburg, and other sites. Our first two nights were spent in a room overlooking the cloister as there were no “seeblick” rooms available – but it was very comfortable. The hotel arranged for us to move to a lake view room the last two nights of our stay. The staff requested that we pack our bags but leave hanging items in the closet. They moved our belongings to the lake view room while we were exploring the wonderful sites in the area. To top things off there was a chilled bottle of champagne waiting for us when we arrived to claim our key for the lake view room. Finally, we have never experienced better customer care than we did with the desk and room service staffs.

Room Tip: Request a "seeblick" (water view) room on a high floor

“A lovely hotel in superb location.”

My partner and I have just returned from a week at Lake Constance staying at The Insel Hotel. A very historic building and a brilliant stay. We were really impressed with the manager who, apart from visiting the dining room every evening chatting to all the guests, also gave a fascinating and entertaining tour of the hotel. Our room was well equipped and very quiet. Must also mention the restaurant and food - really excellent. Throughout our stay members of staff exceeded our expectations and made our stay really memorable. Thank you all for a lovely holiday.
