Most elements of the service were good. Most staff were very accomodating and some staff certainly went the extra mile or even 10 miles. This was our 10th clubmed holiday but the first where we were not given either a welcome party or a pack of information. Until we arrived home and looked at the photographs of the chefs de village in the brochure we were not sure who was the chef at L'Alpe de Huez. Occasionally the information given at the reception desk was inaccurate e.g. what time do the lifts start working? answer should have been 0900 not 0830, and where do you pick up the free bus? answer should have been "by the flag at the entrance to the clubmed grounds" not "outside the door" as I was told by two people. We were told at reception the night before our return and the morning of our return that our flight to Heathrow had not been cancelled despite internet evidence texted to us from the UK saying that it had. UK was correct! We were not told what to do should we arrive at the airport to find we had no flight. We had to phone family in the UK once we arrived at the airport who phoned clubmed to discover what we had to do. Once we found the clubmed desk (in arrivals not departures) an unbelievably helpful and efficient lady from clubmed ensured that we were on the soonest available flight to the UK.

The room was fine. There was plenty of storage space and the shower worked well. The room cleaning service was efficient.

The ski in and out was great.

Apparently the hotel had a swimming pool but we have no idea where this was as there were no signs.

“Most convenient skiing in 25 years!”

Tiny rooms and shower room (really tiny!), but food, staff, ski school and convenience (ski in, ski out, with equipment hire and school all within the hotel) make up for it. Really cheap for what's included - the equivalent booked through UK agents/packages would have been 40% more. Will return again.

“Great location for ski to the door, food excellent, service not so great”

This is the third year I have skied with Club Med, but the first time I came to L'Alpe d'huez with the company. We opted out of their travel option, mostly to avoid Geneva airport and a three hour transfer. Flying into Grenoble from London and taking BenBus transfers was convenient, the airport is much quieter (plus more seats) and we arrived in our own time (so not checking in with coach-loads of others.
The positives:
The resort and the club med formula were ideal for us, as we were a group of 8 with individuals of differing skiiNG abilty. We were very lucky with our ESF instructor, and the scale and variety of the ski area is fantastic. The food was GOOD with themes and regular favourites, I loved the sun deck area, and our room whilst compact was warm and comfortable (tip though- only stay on the 3rd floor upwards, lower- and you will hear all the show and disco throughout the night),
The negatives:
The GOs were tired, antisociable at meal times, and the three times I went to the reception, they were quite rude. These same GOs took up many the sun chairs on the deck one afternoon when there are already too few. There is no where near enough seating in the bar and theatre area. The main restaurant food stations are extremely crowded, and all the contra-flow makes getting your dinner to your table in one piece a nerve jangling experience. Same cramped conditions and lack of seating in the boot room (plus it stank). Pool is constantly jammed - there are a lot of children in this resort, so maybe not so great for couples. Worse was the constant bad smells in the reception, bar and communual areas. The hotel is very tired in places, which is not surprising, as all the above indicates, we were packed in.

I would go back, as I enjoyed the quality of the skiing so much, but I cross my fingers this hotel gets some TLC over the summer (and some more conveniences). PS - do some stair training before going, waiting for the 2 (out of 3) operational lifts at peck times can be wearisome.

“Club Med first timer”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2010

3rd time to Alpe d Huez, 1st time with Club Med. Airport transfers good, excellent location, especially with new Marmottes chairlift, 1st impressions hotel slightly tired, shown facilities on arrival, rooms clean and adequate, 3rd floor, slight noise from theatre up to 11pm, Mini club for our two 5 year olds good . Adult ski lessons good with ESF. Boot and ski room extremely smelly at times, although with the number of boots stored I imagine it would be difficult to avoid. Excellent choice of food at all times, although sometimes busy, could always find a table.Main gripe would be at the mini club awards ceremony, no English was spoken at all, our boys found it very confusing.

“Beautiful Area - standard club med formula - staff friendly but a little amateurish”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 December 2009

I have been on Club Med vacations on a number of occasions - the first was at the age of 16 with my father skiing, many moons ago. Since then I have taken my family and extended family to clubs in Greece and Turkey on at least 4 occasions.
On this occasions I travelled to L'Alpe D'Huez with my teenage daughter. It was the first week of the winter season so both the site and the club had just opened and this was evident on a number of occasions:
In general the club is based on the standard Club Med formula, good food, family oriented. Someone mentioned that the building was dirty and scuffed, but it seemed to me that renovations had been done, in any case, we did not feel that it was scruffy. The club includes pool, sauna, spa and exercise room. They have the mini club for kids and facilities for older children.
Our room overlooked the entrance and the car park - not inspiring in any way with no balconey and little view of the fabulous snow covered area but luckily there was minimal noise from the front of the building. Bedroom small, clean and basic. There was a bottle of water and the obvious shower gels etc provided in the room on the first day. Thereafter we needed to ask for a top up each day as they were not replaced automatically by the staff when they cleaned the room.
The rest of staff were warm and friendly but inexperienced - it was impossible in the first few days for my husband who called from abroad to be connected to our room or leave a message. I was unable to contact him as both phones in the lobby did not work and I was unable to call place a call out through the switchboard (even at the horrific price of 5 euros a minute!! ). The wii fi cards to connect via a lap top ran out on a number of occasions.
General note about C M - it is true that it is all inclusive and at a decent level but in my opinion, it still is an expensive vacation. The ski vacation includes ski pass and lessons for 5 days out of seven, but not equipment rental The other thing is that anything extra bought on site always seems extremely expensive (i.e. photos from photoshop, tlee phone calls, items in shop)
