“one of the best experiences for staying in a hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 January 2011

The owners were most helpful to deal with any issues. they went out of their way to help with something they did not have to do. very good service, even better food. I had a great experience staying here. it definitely exceeded my expectations, 2 star rating is an underestatement. i would stay here again or if can't get a room, would come here for dinner.

“Good value for money: clean and good location.”

We arrived by bus from Grenoble on Friday afternoon and were given a room on the second floor. It had a double bed, a separate toilet, and a bathroom with a shower, and a balcony facing the mountains and other hotels. I don't normally like the carpets but didn't mind it here because the hotel seemed very clean. We thought the hotel could gain points / upgrade its image rather easily: e.g. the curtains and the bed cover were sort of tacky, and were they changed, the rooms would look much nicer and modern.

We payed 126E/night for the room (during the last weekend of the French school holidays) and 12E/person/day for the b/fast, so the total for 1 nigth came to 150E. We had been considering about 1/2 pension, but were happy in the end that we had not chosen it (there are plenty of restaurants nearby; however think of reserving early!).
The hotel seemed very quiet, and there was hardly anyone at the dinner. Even the bar area (which has nice arm chairs, big windowns facing the mountains and a fire place) seemed always nearly emtpy.

The breakfast had everythind we needed: cereal, eggs, ham, cheece, fruits, etc. Nothing fancy, but all basic and ok... A good selection of jams, honey, tea etc. The only thing we didn't like was coffee!

We used the sauna once. It was also empty! You do not need to reserve it, and there is a sauna and a steam room. It is free.

There is also free wifi.

In general, we felt the hotel was a good choice. We had researched for many hotels in the Alpe d'Huez, and this was one of the least expensive ones, and the reviews has been rather good. We still think 150E/night is expensive for what it is, but it is all relative: all hotels are expensive in the Alps... We visited some other hotels out of the curiosity, and remained convinced that we had made a good choice.

The service was always very friendly, and the ski rental recommended by the hotel and located in the same building was very nice too (helmets offered). The access to the ski lifts is also easy: you have two choices: Garde de Sure and Telecentre.

Would we go back? Yes, probably, unless someone tells about another hotel that we still have not discovered!

“Good choice”

I stayed 4 nights in Le Castillan in the second week of January 2010.
I had a single room with a balcony facing north (much cheaper). There is free Wifi in the hotel which is great, but there was no table in the room. Fortunately I discovered a plastic table on the balcony which I then used in the room. There was a bathroom with shower and a separate toilet. The bed was a French double bed, perhaps a bit short for my taste (ca. 190cm).
For a single occupant the room was OK (the lights could be brighter) but I wouldn't like to share this room with a second person.

The location of the hotel is excellent. I had to walk 30 metres before skiing
down to the Signal chair lift. Coming back in the evening one can ski through the village arriving on top of some metal stairs opposite the Maison de Tourisme and walk ca. 100 metres back to the hotel. The resort seemed quiet in the week. However, the nightlife is only a 5 minutes walk away from the hotel.
Finally the food: I took the breakfast option but ended up dining twice a la carte in the hotel's restaurant which is really good. They even arranged for me having a cheese fondue, which usually requires two people sharing.
The staff were generally very friendly and helpful. I left on the Saturday afternoon and did ski in the morning. Since I had to leave my room by 11am they offered me to use the facilities in the Wellness room to change and shower after skiing, which was really nice.
All in all very good value for money, can definitely recommend this hotel.

“Very pleased, would go again”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 June 2009

I'll keep this one short and sweet. The hotel was great with lockers for the skis downstairs, a games room with table tennis, and lovely cosy rooms with nice views on the south side.

It is conveniently located in the town centre, and close enough to the bucket lift (telecentre) if you go at the skiing season. There was also plenty of street parking opposite the hotel when we went.

The staff was particularly nice and helpful and the price was very good compared to other hotels in the area. Would definitely come back if staying at Alpe d'Huez...

“Great Food...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2009

My son and I stayed here first week in January 09, selected because of previous TripAdvisor comments. It's all as described in the other reviews: good clean functional rooms (room 33 for us, facing south with a balcony - you should push the boat out for a south-facing room) with a spotlessly clean bathroom and separate toilet; good breakfasts, although not a huge choice; absolutely superb dinners, 5 courses of wonderful regional cuisine. Don't be tempted to book B&B and go out looking for a restaurant after a hard day's skiing - you'll regret it.

There's also a comfortable lounge / bar, and in the basement, a sauna, steam room, and fitness suite, and also a drying room with free lockers for ski equipment, including boot dryers in each locker.

The other main plus point was the members of staff, who were uniformly helpful, polite and welcoming. The hotel is owned by the Castillan family, who also dined every evening in the restaurant (well, wouldn't you?), and it's obvious that the waiting and cleaning staff are regarded as part of a larger "family". The hotel was fairly quite during our week, I think it's one of the slowest weeks in the season, but that's good news on the slopes.

Finally, as noted in another review, next door to the hotel entrance is Alain Sports, which has ski hire at good rates, and across the road is a brief slope down to a chairlift taking you up to the top of Signal (although you have to be comfortable with at least blue runs to get down into the main ski area). We never tried the free ski bus, couldn't work out the timetable, but it's an easy walk down to the main "lobster pot" lift which takes you over the rooftops to the main ski area.

To sum up: very highly recommended.

One final tip: if you are using the TransIsere service bus to return to Grenoble, you need to book your return at the bus station in ADH 3 days prior to your journey, especially if you're returning on a Saturday. We got a bus to Grenoble for 5 Euro, and a further bus to the airport for another 4 Euro - much cheaper than some other companies which run buses from ADH to the airport (although they are obviously direct).

  • Liked — The evening meals
  • Disliked — Slightly away from the apres-ski (but a plus if you prefer a quite night)
