We stayed one night here en route to our place near Ste Maxime. We had driven through France from Boulogne, staying at four hotels on the way, so we had developed a pretty good nose for what's good and what's not. L'Orangerie still leaves me stumped!
The building is interesting and maintains the institutional feel that belies its past as a convent. Lots of exposed marble and stone, giving a cool but slightly austere feel to the communal areas. The room we stayed in was well decorated with lovely views of the sea, as requested. The biggest frustration in the rooms was, as others have commented:
- Lack of a bar, mini bar, or even water by the bed.
- The shower head is mounted at waist height, so unless your 3'6" tall it's utterly useless! Whoever had this bright idea has succeeded in installing half a shower, since it will only wash your lower half - deeply irritating at 300 Eorus per night.
- Our room was at the front of the building overloooking the pool, whose pump was far too noisey and woke me early in the morning.
- No safe in the room, although apparantly some rooms do have them!
Front of house staff were nice enough, but slightly starchy and formal for my liking. Restaurant staff were charming and helpful and breakfast was great. We had dinner in the town at a really good restaurant - Le Café Valmer, Rue de la Fontaine by the boule track - phenomenal seafood!
In summary, this is a hotel with an identity crisis! It charges relatively high prices for a relatively sparce experience. That said, it was not a bad experience for one night. During our trip, we learnt to ask ourselves the question - would we want to stay here for a week? The answer here was 'no' I'm afraid. In this part of the world there is too much competition and too many well-priced hotels for this tight-fisted Scot to spend his weakened Scottish pounds! We're not too fussy about hotels and I fear a real hotel buff might have a field day in taking this one apart.
