“Great staff”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 August 2010

We stayed in this hotel in July, the first night we had two rooms a ocean view suite and a normal room. The suite was perfect big with an ocean view, but the normal room didn't even have an A.C system, the next day when we complained to the hotel staff, they offered us another room which was great room number 29 it was like entering another hotel. When we left the hotel, unfortunately we left something behind and the hotel contacted me on my U.S phone and they shipped it to us in the next city which we went to in France.

“Enjoyed our stay very much”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 September 2009

We stayed for two nights in Sptember 2009. It's certainly a smart building, though the corridors and public areas are a bit dated. However the room (33) was big, bright and had excellent views (see picture). It was very quiet & had air conditioning. The bathroom was modern and clean, though with the half-height showers that I see other reviewers didn't like. It just means you have to hold the shower. The pool was terrific. Breakfast was a cut above normal French hotel fare with savoury options as well as pastries. The hotel is maybe 500 metres from St Croix Valmer, which is a small town with two or three restaurants, a supermarket etc. The sea is probably 1km away as the crow flies. All in all it wasn't cheap at €180 per night, but we enjoyed it

“Hard to say what this hotel is trying to be!”

We stayed one night here en route to our place near Ste Maxime. We had driven through France from Boulogne, staying at four hotels on the way, so we had developed a pretty good nose for what's good and what's not. L'Orangerie still leaves me stumped!

The building is interesting and maintains the institutional feel that belies its past as a convent. Lots of exposed marble and stone, giving a cool but slightly austere feel to the communal areas. The room we stayed in was well decorated with lovely views of the sea, as requested. The biggest frustration in the rooms was, as others have commented:
- Lack of a bar, mini bar, or even water by the bed.
- The shower head is mounted at waist height, so unless your 3'6" tall it's utterly useless! Whoever had this bright idea has succeeded in installing half a shower, since it will only wash your lower half - deeply irritating at 300 Eorus per night.
- Our room was at the front of the building overloooking the pool, whose pump was far too noisey and woke me early in the morning.
- No safe in the room, although apparantly some rooms do have them!

Front of house staff were nice enough, but slightly starchy and formal for my liking. Restaurant staff were charming and helpful and breakfast was great. We had dinner in the town at a really good restaurant - Le Café Valmer, Rue de la Fontaine by the boule track - phenomenal seafood!

In summary, this is a hotel with an identity crisis! It charges relatively high prices for a relatively sparce experience. That said, it was not a bad experience for one night. During our trip, we learnt to ask ourselves the question - would we want to stay here for a week? The answer here was 'no' I'm afraid. In this part of the world there is too much competition and too many well-priced hotels for this tight-fisted Scot to spend his weakened Scottish pounds! We're not too fussy about hotels and I fear a real hotel buff might have a field day in taking this one apart.

“Very Grand Building”

During our recent trip to Europe we were celebrating our 9th anniversay so were looking for something a bit special for this one night.

We paid quite a lot for a stay at this hotel and whilst not perfect (particularly for the money) overall, it was very nice.

I can understand some of the complaints in the other reviews, but if you know what to expect then you can't be disappointed.

Lovely building and pool. Our room was very nice and very appropriate for an anniversary. The bed had a lovely net draped over it and two heart shaped pillows on it. Unfortunately we did not have a sea view but the room made up for the lack of view.

The night we were there the restaurant was closed so we drove down to the local beach and found a fantastic restaurant. Unfortunately I can't remember what it was called but the food (French) was fantastic and it was set right on the beach. Lovely!

You defintely need a car to stay at this hotel. Even with a Tom Tom, we had to stop and ask directions as it wouldn't pick it up.

Breakfast was very nice outside by the pool.

“Really depends what you are looking for....”

As the reviews below show - this is a bit of a "love it or hate it" hotel, and from the website it tough to tell until you arrive (thus showing the great thing about Trip Advisor!).

The bottom line is that I think you should think about this hotel as little more than a restaurant with amazing rooms and a pool. As previous reviewers have said it is missing many things you would expect in a top class (or even standard class) hotel, but then you aren't paying top hotel prices but are getting an amazing room.

So if you are fairly self-sufficient and just looking for a great room to base a holiday around St Tropez from, then I think it's ideal - we really enjoyed our stay. But if you are looking for a 'full service' hotel experience then probably best to look elsewhere as the lack of bar / room service / minibar etc etc will frustrate.

  • Liked — Style, size and quality of room
  • Disliked — Lack of atmosphere
