This was a one-night stop-over after travelling from Ireland and taking in La Rochelle and Rochefort on our journey toward the Pyrenees.
Given the location, near a number of roundabouts, my hopes weren't high, but as we entered the well-kept grounds my view changed. Despite so many roads being nearby, the hotel is behind a wall and the only noises when outside are the birds and other guests.
The staff were helpful and friendly, the rooms spotless and the bed comfortable and the decor of the restaurant and piano area were pure luxury. One of the other reviewers mentioned the lack of table linen, but the quality of the food was much superior to that served in many restaurants with well-pressed linen so not an issue.
On the night we were there, the restaurant was virtually empty which I felt was a shame. So many people are missing out on a wonderful gastronomic experience. The grounds looked very inviting and we had every intention of going for a walk after our meal. However, the decoration and ambience together with the wonderful food were too conducive and several hours were very enjoyably spent over the meal, which was delicious, whilst watching the ducks and swans on the pond and terrace outside. Did I feel guilty that I was eating duck as its live cousin occasionally wandered into the restaurant? Not one little bit! The entire meal was a delight: the duck was beautifully cooked, and chocolate mousse was sinfully delicious.
I have every intention of making sure my next trip to France brings me to back to Relais du Bois Saint Georges, for more than one night and more of their wonderful food.
