As a stop-off on the A28 when going either North or South, the location is excellent, just five or six minutes from the road. However, the motel style accommodation is hidden away nicely enough and there is no noise from passing traffic. The jewel in this hotel's crown however, is the restaurant. When you have spent a day driving long distances, you don't want to have to head out again to eat. Well, at this Campanile, all you have to do is cross the courtyard. The restaurant is brightly lit in a contemporary style and a number of menus are on offer. I chose the Gourmand which offered a buffet starter, a main course selection and a buffet dessert. The buffet table, while not groaning under the weight of food, offered a wide range of salads, meats and vegetables together with a selection of sauces. Not feeling particularly adventurous, I decided to have a hamburger. This arrived as prime fillet beef between two potato blini's with a creme fraiche sauce. It was light and delicious - exceeding the quality and taste of some very expensive restaurants I've sampled in the past. Finally, the dessert buffet was everything you would expect in France from heavier Tarte Tatin to delicate pastries and mousses. With two glasses of very enjoyable house Beaujolais, the bill came to 23Euro - something else those expensive restaurants could learn from.
Add to this free wi-fi, parking etc and you have an extremely good value for money package. The only complaint I have is that the French penchant for dishing out "door rashes" when parking and opening doors is well catered for due to the small spaces in the car parks directly in front of the rooms. Car loving Brit's should look for the parking around the back...!
