“Nice hotel - small room”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2011

I have stayed in this old building many times they used to have an excellent restaurant downstairs but this is long gone. For a superb meal try Au Turbotin which is only a few minutes walk away and has the most amazing menu, including drinks a minimum of 50 Euros each. The room was clean and comfortable but a little small, the breakfast was good. The only drawback was the building work goping on which started fairly promptly in the morning just outside my window!

“Hotel Improved and Modernised”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 September 2010

The earlier reviews say that the hotel is poor and put me off staying, but It has been modernised and improved. Very good rooms to the IBIS standard, helpful staff and, with the nearby resturant, everything to recommend it.

“Surprisingly good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 April 2010

The hotel has obviously been refitted since previous reviews. Clean, tidy and now all non-smoking. Small room (on the top floor) but good bed and shower.

The location is ideal, just 5 mins walk from the Belfry, with good parking outside. Reasonable bar for an Ibis with willing staff to serve at all hours.

We stayed for 3 nights as part of a biggish group on a motorcycle trip and te staff could not have been more helpful. Fantastic value for money,

“Typical Ibis behind classic facade”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 October 2007

We had difficulty in finding the way into the car park as the whole "place" in front of the hotel was being dug up and replaced, but we got there eventually. The car park in front of the hotel doesn't really have enough spaces, but we had no problem parking. The location is very convenient for the town centre.

The hotel exterior is classic and faded, but internally the building is typically Ibis with rooms which are compact and functional but tired. We were on the second floor, which was clean and fresh, and looked out over the "place" though windows which worked but were again past their best. The bathroom needed a refit, but everything worked as expected with a good shower and lots of hot water. The walls between the rooms need more sound-proofing and like most Ibises, the self closing doors slam shut noisily. The TV was old but worked, with a range of European channels. The blurb in hotel indicated the hotel was going to be refurbished, which it needs to keep up to speed with the new "place" and tram system which is under construction.

We asked the receptionist for the hotel's hair-dryer but it was broken. Breakfast seemed expensive so we made other arrangements The lift is very small - we couldn't get both of us and two suitcases in it. The service was friendly and adequate, and for €39 a night we have no complaints as we did little more than sleep and wash there.

We enjoyed and recommend the town of Douai; the 40m high Belfry with its 62-bell carillon, the medieval Town Hall and Les Gayants de Douai. We also enjoyed a raclette in the Savoie Restaurant, "Le Ch'ti Charivari" in Rue de la Boucherie a few hundred metres away.

  • Liked — Location, price
  • Disliked — It's tired and faded; needs a major re-fit.

“Pleaseant surprise”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 October 2007

Not what I was expecting for an Ibis. It is in a traditional old building in the centre of town. Rooms are typical Ibis but the public rooms are all the old stonework etc.
Stayed there for the Rugby World Cup (near to Lens). Whilst Lens is rather indsutrial Douai was a wonderful picturesque historic surprise. The town hall is even a World Heritage Site!
Worth a visit - a good place to stay for a weekend visiting the WW1 battlefields too.
