“Good hotel and likely to get better”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 July 2009

A reasonable hotel and good restaurant in this town just off the edge of the Dordogne. The old hilltop town is very pleasant for a stroll with steep, narrow alleys and old buildings; it deserves to better known though does not seem to be marketed much. The main commercial area is now just off the south of this, with the road (D704) going through it and past this hotel if heading northwest (heading southeast, the road splits in town and you are forced to the south, but there is an easy return to the left at the first ‘Centre Ville’ sign).
Some parking on the road just by the hotel or park in the square opposite (except if market the following day – check the signs).

We stayed at this hotel last year but it is now under new ownership by a young French couple who speak good English. In the few weeks they have been there they have transformed the restaurant area and the menu, which is now very inviting and seems popular with the locals. The menu is quite short and features excellent local foods; 3 courses for dinner with wine and coffee about 30 Euros. Continental breakfast very reasonable at 6 Euros.

The hotel needs refurbishment although is clean and comfortable (the work already done by the new owners suggests they will make a good job of the gradual upgrade that they intend to do). Rooms/ bathrooms in the annex are quite large (from last year, those in the main hotel are smaller and slightly older). Prices are good at present, especially for a hotel in this area, with double at 55 Euros and single occupancy at 45 Euros.

“Hotel Bissonnier”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 May 2009

I would have to totally disagree with the reviewer about the service at the Hotel Bissonnier. The whole team were delightful, we arrived with our 10 year old daughter quite late, we were hungry and tired and they opened the kitchen specially for us. Not once were there any hostilities in our 2 day stay. We were treated as if long lost family if anything. The hotel I admit is a little jaded, she has definately had her heyday and unfortunately the old dear is now wearing her age a little, however it is clean, reasonably priced and in a lively location. We loved it, alright its not exactly boutique chic, but for the price and the welcome you can't go wrong.

“Great location, friendly staff.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 August 2008

The hotel is excellent for its location. We were there with a young child, and our parents. We booked 2 rooms.

The rooms were clean but they do need a bit of an update, but they were fine. We could smell smoke from other rooms which were sneaky of the occupants as it's against the law now?

Anyway, the food was good. My only complain is the breakfast. The breakfast should be buffet style as there was only 1 waitress and we saw some people not being served after a long long while! Moreover, my parents didn't know they could order more than just the bread and tea/coffee given, which was a shame. They weren't offered juice, croissant or anything else!

Other than that, the hotel has an old French world charm that was very pleasant, and the hoteliers were so very friendly that yes, if we came to this region again, we would definitely stay there! The 2 dogs, Junior and Ranier were utterly adorable (and I'm not even dog-fond!)

“An enjoyable stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 September 2007

We really didn't know what to expect having seen some of the adverse comments, particularly as we were going to stay there for 10 days and be joined by family from the UK and Singapore. We were very happy with our stay at the hotel. The owner and staff were great and worked hard to make us comfortable and at home. The hotel is genuinely 2-3 star but is comfortable and generally quiet. We occupied the family suite on the top floor and so had plenty of space to spread out and were at the rear of the hotel where traffic noise was not a problem although the refuse collectors visited noisily every other day at a very early hour.

The menu was perfectly adequate and the food well cooked and well presented, portions could be better. The whole area is great for walking and exploration and we would recommend the hotel for people who want comfortable and economical accommodation

“Perfectly adequate for one or two nights”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 July 2007

We stayed for one night. There was a warm welcome from English speaking staff. The room we had at the front was indeed rather dark when we arrived, largely because it faced East and had trees in front. This may mean that it was tolerably cool in high summer. Our supper was good ‘home cooking’ standard. Breakfast was in dazzling morning sun on the terrace. There was traffic noise as expected in a French town and plenty of public parking across the road. We can’t comment on the noise inside because the place had few guests when we were there.

The hotel’s leaflet suggested three stars, but we felt that it was only two stars and we did not feel the cost excessive. We didn’t have a chance to explore Gourdon, but getting there from the péage meant a drive in lovely countryside along the N20 that runs parallel, a scenic route according to the Michelin map. The hotel wasn’t exceptional but it would be perfectly adequate for one or two nights’ stay.
