This may sound like a backhanded compliment but really it's not: the best thing about the hotel by far is its sister hotel, the Covo dei Saraceni, a few streets down right on the beach. Not only does it have a pool and terrace above the crowded beach, but the restaurant served the best food we had in town, including a tuna carpaccio so good that one of our party went back the next day just to have it again. Staying at the Ancora gives you access to the Covo's terrace and a discount at the (not inexpensive) restaurant.
Back up the hill at the Ancora, you'll find nice, friendly staff, an old building with details like built-in drawers, high ceilings and balconies looking over the sea. Our room was airy, with a spacious bathroom and some nice (presumably French) toiletries. An average breakfast is served by an attentive gentleman, five floors down (the hotel is built onto the side of the cliff, with reception at the top and rooms on successive floors going down). Wifi requires payment and is available only in lobby.
All in all, a nice choice.
