“You can't get closer to the center of town!”

This was our second time in Norcia, we originally heard roomers and read just a bit about Norcia when we were at Euro Chocolate in Perugia. We took a day trip and were hooked, it was ALWAYS on our MUST DO list for our return trip to Italy. Norcia did not disappoint, the tourists are mostly Italians coming in on buses for the day or for a short weekend. Norcia was a very cut off walled city nestled in a truly beautiful valley. Picture Shangrali, but in Italy, and you come close to the idea. You want to come for the pure beauty, but you want to eat the gastronomi products of the area including, fresh black truffles, pork products, the wild boar. And in all cases, definitely eat at The Ristorante Granaro Del Monte, the oldest restaurant in Umbria. It is attached to the Hotel Grotta Azzurra, and owned by the same family, the Bianconi's. In fact the Bianconi's own multiple properties in Norcia, including the Best Western, and a Relais & Chateaux property just opposite this one which we had an opportunity to tour. The adage is you get what you pay for. I have read some older reviews of this property and they do not account for the following. The price of the room is a good value CONSIDERING, you are dead center in the middle of the town, you are in a mediaeval building, the utilities all work, including the elevator. Think of this as a ski lodge right on the mountain, you came for the town, don't pick on the room. Its a good value. If you want perfect, the Relais & Chateaux property might be for you. We are both handicapped and want to be close in to the action to limit our walking. AND we are typically looking to spend about 100 euro a night on accommodations. Which can be done here, by taking the hotels name, removing the spaces and doing an internet search. Booking direct always makes the property owner more interested in giving you an upgrade if it is available. Heres a great thing to do if you are staying overnight. You can go to the church of St Benedict, and just to the left in the rear wait at the roped off area, at 7:30PM a monk will appear and will open the rope allowing you down into the crypt. The monks come into the Cyrpt and chant and sing for about a half hour in candle light. Very moving, check with the hotel desk for more information as the times may change. Now as for when to go. Weekends and holidays are VERY busy and you might not get the attention or service you would like, we were here over the weekend as well as all saints day, and during the week. During the week Norica was all ours with less than 50 tourists. FYI: bus tour groups get smaller rooms and tressle table food service which can be a little off putting. But these are value tours, and again you get what you pay for. We had an EXCELLENT experience in Norcia and look forward to returning, (on the weekday) again staying inside the walled city, as we have been spoiled by the Bianconi family.

“Very small room and bathroom at this hotel!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 November 2011

Our room for two was tiny (practically the whole room was taken up by the twin beds, so much so that only one of us could be in the room at a time unless we were actually in the beds!) but we were a large group and must have taken every room in the hotel. Some people in our group had much larger rooms...but many had very small rooms and bathrooms, some bathrooms were so small that they even had a "pull down from the wall toilet"...I would say this is TOO small for two people!

A very few people in our group stayed at the new Senaca Hotel, owned by the same people, which was VERY nice!

All our group's meals were at the Grotta Azzura, the food was only "ok" and the service was "hurried and harried" and not as gracious as other places our large group ate in Italy.

The town of Norcia, famous as the birthplace of Saints Benedict and Scholastica, was charming in a "touristy" kind of way. We felt very blessed and welcomed at the Sunday
service in the Cathedral in the central square. So I would say: YES got to Norcia, but stay at the Senaca if you possibly can...if not, ask for one of the larger rooms/suites at the Azzurra.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the larger rooms or suites with a balcony, the smaller rooms are tiny!!

“A gem in the clean air of Umbria”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 October 2011

We stayed for week at the Grotta Azzura whilst on a walking holiday with HF. It is family run and the father, mother and sons all assist in making sure the hotel runs as smoothly as everything does in Italy. I needed to contact my tour operator at one point and was allowed to use the hotel phone to get in touch with London and then they told me when the subsequent fax arrived. Nothing was too much trouble and they really wanted you to enjoy your holiday. The family own other hotels nearby and one has a full leisure complex with swimming pool and exercise equipment which you can use. The small town of Norcia is walled and visited by many Italians so has the feel of a tourist attraction with quite a range of specialist shops. The walking is superb either along valleys or reasonably high mountains nearby.

Room Tip: The hotel is an old granery so rooms do greatly vary in size but try to demand a larger room and the...

“beautiful hotel at the center of norcia”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 October 2011

The hotel is owned by Bianconi family like many other hotels in Norcia. On every document you can see the phrase "bianconi ospitalita". That means "bianconi hospitality" and it is 100% true. I feel much better than at home. They know very well what to do, how to handle, etc. Such things are much more important for me than luxury.

“very hospitable”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 September 2011

We went to Norcia to celebrate our 27th anniversary and to discover another part of umbria where we live part time. Our bed was quite comfortable and the room was very clean. our little private balcony overlooking the rooftops more than made up for the smallish quarters. WHen the owners found out that it was our anniversary, they insisted on giving us a bottle of truffle amaro and water for our ride. they were quite lovely and helpful and gave us a guided tour of their newly opened relais, palazzo seneca which was an extraordinary place and with a package booking not bad for a splurge. we will be back!
