“Old World Charm with First Class Service”

This lovely family operated /owned hotel has been my pick in Italy for over the past 10 years. The charming hotel located below Montecatini Alto has been my personal retreat and get away. I always receive such great service and especially from Arturo, who's friendly face and professional manners have always greeted me at the front door. The location is superb, situated amongst a park and across the street from a beautiful spa where live orchestra and opera music can be heard in the mornings. Only a ten minute walk to the train station, where you can take day trips to Florence, Lucca, Pisa and many historic cities. My favorite restaurant is La Torre, only a few minutes on the funicular up to Alto for amazing views and fabulous food/wine. Ask Fabiano for his suggestions. The town is like a story book at night, with a colorful carousel lit up and children and adults of all ages having their gelato and strolling with family and friends. The Taddei Family have added the personal charm and service with their Father Guido and his Son Ciro at the helm of this beautiful property. Attentive staff, wonderful location and the feeling of Dolce Vita keep me coming back to this special place.. I'm already planning our next trip back to Hotel Astoria.

“Great Hotel in a Great Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 July 2010

We originally picked this out as a place to stay to visit Florence and Pisa, but found as many interesting and beautiful places much nearer at hand.
The hotel, perhaps like a number of other italian hotels, is not new but is clearly smartened up/refurbished on a regular basis - it would look more 'at home' in Eastbourne than on a Greek island. That's not a criticism but just a point to remember for those who prefer lots of glass and stainless steel: it would look out of place in Montecatini.
It's a family-run affair and hugely friendly - as always it seems to pay dividends to try out your italian, no matter how rusty it might be. In fact the English of several of the staff was even rustier than my italian - so sign language can be useful too!
Hotel food was very good - very fresh and a lot was locally sourced. Local wines in the hotel (chianti etc) were good value at around 12.50 euros per bottle.
Rooms are a very good size - and ours had much more than the usual amount of storage space: which made a nice change from many a modern hotel.
The town was quaintly interesting. There are many free concerts during July/August and they're of an excellent standard with many touring choirs & orchestras. Horse racing (trotting) in the local hippodrome every Saturday was differently interesting; as was a trip up to the picturesque Montecatini Alto on the very ancient funicular.
Nearby Pistoia and Lucca have several Jazz and Rock concerts at this time of year too.
Florence & Pisa are easily reached by train: this really is a cheap way to get around. 8.20 euros return for the hour trip to Florence: try and find that distance for a similar price in the UK!!
All in all a great part of Italy and a really nice hotel.

“Old-fashioned charm”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 October 2009

The Astoria hotel is like stepping back in time but in a charming and quirky way. You could imagine that it was pretty much the same as it is now at the turn of the previous century - filled with tourists 'taking the waters'. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and each seemed to take several roles at all times of day and night! The room was small and old-fashioned, but was clean and comfortable. Dinner was served at 7:30 sharp - on the sounding of a bell! - but it was pretty uninspiring (if plentiful). Breakfast was better. The hotel was located in the park to the north of the main town so was quiet - it was a 15 minute walk down to the train station. Recommended but don't expect a great meal.

“Charming and friendly hotel - good food”

This is a very nice hotel in a beautifull building with nice decor in restaurant and sitting room. We found the staff very friendly and serviceminded. The buffet breakfast was good and you can sit outdoors. The pool was clean and there was a lifeguard. The pool area has a nice little cafe where you can get pasta and salads ect. We had dinner every night at the hotel becauce we loved the food.
We recomend this hotel if you are in Toscany - we went to Lucca, Firenze and the sea by car easily in 6o minutes.
